Looking at it, there is enough room for a sata drive to live inside a DVD drive casing that would slot into a laptop. Of course there would need to be a small board that converted the DVD connection to an HDD one.
Is there such a converter?

the connectors for SATA data/power should be the same. Not 100% sure if the placement of them is identical though.

No the power connector is shorter and by the looks of it may not supply what the HDD requires.
