Are SATA drives backward compatible with PATA laptops?
I thought it would be listed on the interface?

No their not, they have different connectors at the end of the drive.
But I'm sure you can buy a PATA to SATA connector and stick it on there if you have room. -
That's the thing I'm not sure about. Is it just a simple cable that you'd need or are they not compatible at the hardware level?

It won't have enough space to put a converter, you have to get a PATA hard drive.

Laptop hard disks don't use cables, they slot straight into a connector, so as Coriolis says you'd need a PATA hard disk.
