    SL9400 = 1.86ghz, 6M L2, 17W
    P8600 = 2.4ghz, 3M L2, 25W

    I'm curious what the performance is between the two. If anyone has a machine w/ one of these processors, care to run Passmark's benchmark tool and post the CPU number? (I'm not married to that particular benchmark, it just came up as the first one in a google search).

    Basically I'm trying to choose between a Thinkpad X200 and X200s. The X200s has the slower processor but lets you opt for the LED WXGA+ panel, which doesn't seem to be available on the X200.

    Realistically, most of the time I'm going to be using this thing docked. So maybe I should buy the X200 w/ the faster processor and less fancy screen. If the X200 featured a 25W processor with 6M cache that would be ideal, but alas it does not.

    Actually I'd like to know as well, and also, anyone with a SP9300 CULV please chime in... I've been wanting to sell one of my older systems and get a DM3 model with this processor. I'm just guessing but I'm thinking that the P8600 will mop the floor with the SL9400 on processor intensive tasks, even though the SL9400 has more cache.

    I'm a sucker for silence, though, so if the P8600 is going to make the X200's fans run noticeably louder then I'd definitely opt for the SL9400.

    The X200 and X200s apparently have different heat sinks, so the noise and heat level of both are about the same, from what I've heard. They both run very cool and very silent.

    The P8600 definitely does outperform the SL9400, but without knowing how you're going to be using your laptop, it's hard to recommend which to choose. Do you have a limited budget as well (the X200 is cheaper)?

    Budget is essentially unlimited, for practical purposes.

    Most of the time I'll have this system docked, with an external monitor, mouse and keyboard, and will use it as my primary desktop. I don't play many games, so I'm fine with the integrated graphics. Silent operation is non-negotiable. Mostly I'll be doing typical web browsing and some Java development in Eclipse.

    Occasionally I'll need to take it with me when I travel, and I expect my wife will be removing it from the dock to use in other parts of the house when I'm not at my desk.

    Another option I considered is a T400 with a faster 35W CPU. It wouldn't cost all that much more, offers a bigger screen, integrated optical drive, etc. But, again, if the 35W CPU is going to make it noisier then I'm fine with something smaller/slower.

    go with faster cpu and undervolt it..
    you'll have higher performance and good heat-noise-battery ratio

    Undervolting would be an option with either processor, so that doesn't really help answer the question.

    Generally speaking, it looks like the 33% faster clock on the P8600 is a bigger deal than the 50% smaller L2 cache.

    actually I think that answered it,
    you'll have higher performance and you don't need to worry about high-noise from the fan, because it'll be cooler > less fan noise

    You said "go with the faster cpu" without specifying which one was faster.

    As for the undervolting, if an undervolted P8600 is quieter than a normally volted P8600, wouldn't an undervolted SL9400 also be quieter than a normally volted SL9400? See what I mean? Without knowing how they compare initially, I can't say which one is quieter when both are undervolted.

    Unless you're saying the SL9400 can't be effectively undervolted since it basically comes "pre-undervolted" by Intel.

    oh LOL I was referring to P8600 even though I don't have any statistics..
    but you can see it clearly from the processors' type..
    it's performance vs battery life (P8600 vs SL9400, that is)
