Hi,
I will order a 60GB SSD soon. I plan to install Windows 7 Professional, Aion, Left 4 Dead 2, and maybe another game in the future. Of course, my school work too. It is Mushkin's Callisto Deluxe. I am wondering if I should keep the drive 80% full at maximum. I'm not so sure why but I was told by someone to follow that rule. The SSD uses SandForce controller if that helps any.
Thanks.
edit: It will deliver this wednesday!

I think it depends on the drive, since the controllers and over-provisioning varies. My C300 doesn't start to take a performance hit till around 90%.

Thanks guys. I guess I will have to wait and see.
Do I need a cable to install it in my laptop? -

I don't think you need to keep 20% free.
PS. If you disable hibernation and system restore (and pagefile) and you'll gain a lot of GBs.

Hypothetically, mechanical hard drives will read/write faster to the outer tracks of the disk platter than the inner tracks, because of angular velocity. But modern mechanical hard drives show little to no benefit from this. And SSD's absolutely show zero benefit to this, since there aren't any rotating moving parts.
The more likely explanation for why you heard the 80% rule is because whoever told you that has no idea what they are talking about. -
The 5th post down in that very thread you linked tells you not to turn off the page file.
Now, turning off hibernation is a way to free up space, if you are willing to give up the benefits of hibernation. You can save yourself xGB of space that way (where x=the GB's of RAM). -
I personally tried it for a couple of weeks and haven't had any problems with it. -
The problem with turning the page file off is that the moment you run out of phyiscal memory, your application will crash. If you happen to only run applications that are small enough to fit in physical RAM, then you will not experience problems.
Given that, I would still not recommend disabling the page file. Set it smaller if you want (maybe 1GB or 2GB), but I definitely vote for "do not disable". -
I understand the problems of turning off the page file but I'm a light user with 4GB RAM. I think it works quite well in my situation.
-
I don't disable my pagefile, but I do reduce the size for min 256MB to max 1024MB. I don't need it consuming 2-4GB of disk space for no reason.

Being a light RAM user, with 2gb or 4gb installed RAM, I turnoff pagefile; no problems at all.
But if you are a multitasker, don´t disable this.
