I think everyone wants a SSD, perhaps I'm dillusional because I think they are so cool and I want one. I'm not willing to pay $3400 for a 128 gigs of storage though. I would be willing to pay $400. How long do you think it will be before we see such prices and what price would you be willing to pay for a solid state drive?

Shadowfate Wala pa rin ako maisip e.
Next year probably or 2 years, technology advances fast this days

I don't expect you will be able to see 128Gb anywhere near $400 for awhile although maybe sub $1000 within the next year.
Presently, the price for a company to just buy slc NAND is just under $1400 for a 128Gb ssd before anything else.
If they look at making a mlc ssd, you will see the price of JUST THE NAND drop to $500. Now, calculate the costs of the controller, cost of components, seller profits and reseller profits on top of that.
Stay tuned within the next few days for my next SSD article which just may be the best yet!! -
...by which time, of course, you'll want even more storage, and hard discs will be cheaper too. SSDs may always be much more expensive than hard discs, just as hard discs are (and probably always will be) much more expensive than optical discs for the same capacity.
-
I think there will be a time when the performance difference between the two will be realized. It will be then that we see people happily sacrificing space for the huge performance benefit of the ssd.
Within the next few months, many companies will be releasing ssds at prices well below that previously charged as these will be in the mlc footprint. This is when it will all start. -
I said it in the past I will say it again I see SSD and HDD on the same computers in the future. The SSD OS and important apps HDD secondary apps and mass storage so 128GB is very functional with that kind of strategy even 64GB I think could hold most peoples OS and apps I think leaving HDD just for mass storage. A man has to dream anyway! flamenko we are waiting hurry up.

I want an SSD...
But not at the current price! Hopefully the MLC SSDs will start the trend.... -
Some of this is going to depend on use. What's my buy in point? 128GB @ < US$500.
I could actually get by pretty well with 64GB; but 128 would be a bit more comfortable for room to grow.
IMO, multiple HDs in a laptop (SSD + Mechanical) doesn't buy you anything. No weight savings, no heat savings, no battery savings. I don't see that as a viable option. It completely removes most of the advantages of this path.
Cheers, -
I get one when they are 200+GB for <300$
-
Im willing to pay $500 for a 128gb SSD. I have a feeling SSD will get alot cheaper by end of this year IF its gonna become a standard and replace HDD's in the future. Technology is moving pretty quick. Hopefully they improve the write/read speeds even better
MASS PRODUCTION!
Its not really the size people are after but the read speed, no-heat and lightweight advantage. Everything else goes to external hdd -
I'd be completely comfortable with a 64GB SSD, but they still aren't at a reasonable price point.

I've posted a new article which may be able to address some of the questions raised and it can be found here.
Please don't be afraid to ask any questions! -
SSD = too expensive...
Hell, I'd certainly get it if they gave it for free... really I would! if it were free...
SSD I want one, I think you want one too. But the price.. how much are you willing to pay?
