Looking for suggestions on a 250GB SSD. I've read good things about the following two drives:
OCZ Summit

Corsair P256

Both sound good, and are within my price range. Apparently Intel is suppose to release a super fast 320GB SSD in Q4 but I'm too inpatientBudget is below $900.

why not to get from eBay?
-
That's quite a budget for a hard drive... I've been hearing good things about the Intel ones. Do you really want 250GB of storage? I'd suggest holding off till Q4, but you're too impatient.

Check out the SSD thread, I posted a link to Dell. They are selling the Samsung 256GB drive for $480 (the drive that the two you selected are based off of). You could even get two if you are lucky enough to find a coupon

Can someone enlighten me and explain what is the deal with writing on these drives? Is there any limitation with regards to how many times you can write? I also heard that it is not recommended to use defragmentation software on them.
Thanks -
I have a OCZ Summit 128GB (128MB cache), and it is awesome. So much better in so many ways than a fast 7200rpm HHD that it is really not comparable. The best upgrade you can do to a pc of any age that can take it. Good overview of various SSD's at http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/17136, http://www.hexus.net/content/item.p...u3d.com/article/ocz-summit-250gb-ssd-review/1, http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=799 and http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/16848

What do you think of this (boot time)?

SOMEBODY has money to spend!

If you buy a SSD just for boot time, then you're wasting your money. It's about the responsiveness in a working environment. I have a Seagate 7200.3 HDD that can get into Windows 7 in 10 seconds, doesn't mean that the drive is faster than an SSD.

Laptopmag posted boot times too:

PS. I moved this thread to the Hardware forum. -
then why do I see it in the Mac forum?
-
That's because it leaves a 'Redirect' so that people can still find it. The actual thread is in the hardware forum.
-
What's with the huge discrepancies between the two graphs?
edit: nm two different computers, I thought they used a standardized test bed (as I've seen them claim but I guess it's only within that one review)
But still the Intel's results fluctuate...
SSD recommendations
