Hi
I have a 80GB Intel SSD, looking at about 50GB empty space.
What should I do to save space on my HDD? I put most of my programs on an external drive

Here is the answer to your question
If you already have 50GB empty space, why would you want to get even more space?
It's not going to give any benefits. -
I'm just kinda worried...that space is shrinking slowly
Better safe than sorry -
you might consider turning off system restore and using tune up utilities , get ridd of old internet pages , cookies and data to get more space.. just one thing , why do u want 50GB space free?
-
i'm not sure exactly why i need 50GB but i dont want to be at a position where I have 1 GB left and pondering what to delete and such
-
u should have got an 160GB to not worry lol ..

#2 on that link saved my friend over 120GB in Vista. That's probably my favorite tweak.

squelchy451,
What is the point of the SSD if you don't install your programs on it?
As to the free space question, you could easily reverse those numbers (use about 50GB and the remainder ~24GB free) before you should start getting concerned (performance and/or spacewise).
To save space is a no brainer: don't store video/music/data/downloads on it that you are not currently and actively using.
As for the O/S and the programs you need, the space they use is what it is - you can try to delete any sample data (including Windows sample video/music/etc.) they might install by default, but if you really need to use that specific program, not much else you can do.
If this is a notebook as I assume it is, I highly do not recommend disabling the hibernation file. Unless all you do on this computer is meaningless (to you) then when the battery dies the computer will simply switch off without saving your work instead of giving you the option to continue from that point with a hibernation file in place.
Cheers! -
Not to mention how many people have had issues with systems coming out of a hibernation state. Only instance I can see where it might save you is if you closed your laptop, it went to sleep, you forgot about it, and the battery died or it shut down automatically. Even then it's really bad practice to not save periodically and especially before sleep or hibernation. I wouldn't trust your system to keep your data alive with either sleep or hibernation, it's more of a convenience than anything else. -
In my opinion hibernation is a great feature, not just for empty batteries. I disabled it anyway because I'm on a 46GB SSD.
You're saving space though -
Also, like I said, relying on sleep or hibernation to keep your data without saving is a bad move. You'd be more apt to lose data after a hangup from sleep or hibernation wakeup than the once in a very great while battery comletely dying.
And yeah, with lower capacity SSD's space is at a premium, it's harder to justify hibernation. -
IDK why but hibernation doesnt work on my laptop....I tried many solultions for enabling it including going to the power menu and using some command prompt voodoo
-
It's about a 50% successful recovery from hibernation for me, usually I just let it sleep even if it's for a whole day.

I never had any problem with hibernation, on countless laptops with countless different hard drives.
-
Yeah, it seems really surprising that people are facing problems, with hibernation. Me and quite a lot of my friends do it regularly. [In fact, we sometimes have put the system for hibernation when a game is running(ie. lots of resources used) and still it managed to resume fine]

Maybe just depends on the way the laptop handles suspending tasks and resuming them. I wish it were more robust, but like I said, it's a mixed bag unfortunately.
