Wouldn't very fast 4k speeds at Intel's current or reduced latency potentially have a large effect?
But yeah. Another possible thing is the lack of a need for TRIM.

Are you saying that your friends G2 envy scored proper 4kb random read and write numbers as compared to the number posted in the links I provided?
If you had taken the time to read the links you would have noticed that the problem occurred with 3rd party SSDs and not just the ones supplied by HP. -
+1 on that.
-
I was just about to ask the same thing HT. My Crystal Disk Info has SMART 48bit LBA and NCQ enabled, but nothing else. Help appreciated with a +1 no doubt. Thanks
-
Crazy thing is that the firmware is the same. I don't get it. I'm going to call HP and see about getting the SSD replaced. I really don't want to return the whole laptop because it's in good condition otherwise compared to some of the other horror stories and don't want to sacrifice my Bing Cashback.
If the next SSD still doesn't have TRIM, I'm going to see if they will send me an Intel 160GB in its place and credit me the difference. I really would much prefer 256GB over 160GB, but in this situation I guess I'll just have to manage.
edit: firmware isn't the same. Must have brain lapsed. Check here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-owners-lounge-part-deux-153.html#post6538632
I'm seeing if HP can release a firmware update and give us the tool to update with too. -
What firmware version is it showing in Crystal Disk Info?
-
Again...........
Please: first you should understand my post I NEVER said that I got better results on the envy using the G2.
I read those links... Those links are almost useless, many of them dont know what they are talking about...
I have tried this SSD with MANY laptops with DIFFERENT chipsets and many configs and the SSD still performs the same... I tried a silicon edge blue on the envy(Yes my friend got the 2.5" adapter and the cable), m11x and the other computers with BETTER results. Perhaps thats my own case...
So if you have taken the time to test with other computers you will discover that... -
Even faster 4K random reads will actually not improve real world performance for single user environments.
-
How would you explain those numbers?
The left one is from a X25-M G2 160GB on an R2 ( ignore the right one)
which is from this post
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...sd-tips-tricks-benchmarks-14.html#post6530842
If it's not the chipset then what is it? The drivers? or the SSD? -
You've got:
a) the speeds the SSD supports
b) the speeds the chipset supports
4K speeds were originally influenced by the driver a lot - but the newer chipsets are better with them compared to the old ones if I am not mistaken.
The drivers are important too - but the fact that you can get close to the top speeds in IDE mode for an Intel (except in queued reads/writes) means the drivers are not that important. -
It was never on IDE mode, it was always on AHCI, in safe mode it simply doesn't load the Intel chipset/storage drivers
What I see here a big failure from Intel with the PM55 chipset
*EDIT*
More data concerning the chipset, not only Intel SSDs are affected, but OCZ vertex as well

Doubt we'll see a fix from intel. Guess we have to live with it. Frankly, in real life situations I doubt this performance hit is visible at all but it does bug me nevertheless
-
Yeah, I don't expect a fix for this either, it just bugs me a lot to know that I've paid so much money for an SSD that in this laptop performs like the X25-V which costs less than 1/3 of the price.
The reason I noticed that after a month of use is because I had to run a couple of VMs and test a few web server setups at the same time. On my R1 with the same configurations, the times reported were significantly lower and that's why I run a couple of benchmarks and saw the difference.
That's the reason I bought this SSD, to be able to perform heavy tasks as fast as possible. -
Selling a brand new Vertex 2 120GB. UPS code is cut from box for my rebate and drive has been opened. Tested for one hour.
Must raise cash quickly. $275 free shipping in USA. Paypal only. Will be listing on EBay, wanted to offer here first. -
How come you're selling so quick? Disappointed?
-
Firmware: VBM1AH1Q
-
Really, truly brand new (sealed and NOT used for an hour) is $279 at newegg (after rebate). If you want to sell it quickly, you might rethink your pricing...

aww.. not what I wanted to hear (mine will be here on Monday)
Please share some of your impressions on your Vertex 2 -
What's the fastest SSD [256GB] as of right now?
-
About Corsair Force, I just read a user on a dutch forum saying that he gets BSOD every time Windows gives a TRIM command.
With the right connection it's probably the C300
Crucial RealSSD C300 Review (256GB) | StorageReview.com -
Speaking of Crucial, supposedly they'll have an "SSD Blowout sale" on Monday.
I don't know any details though. -
And wait for the rebate? No way. I'd get his easy. It's 1 hour, not 100 hours.
-
This is NO reflection on the drive, which was just fine. Just that I could not tell the difference between that and my Corsair. I bought 2 from the Egg because of rebate and now see I can only get ONE rebate per household even if I bought TWO. Damm. The drive is fine, you will love it, no worries.
Dave
-
The rebate will be over soon. All I did was clone it, fire it up, open some folders etc. then realized that due to too many bills, cash was getting tighter than I even imagined and I had better sell it ASAP and that precluded even more time and/or benchmarks. I will do a secure erase before shipping.
I still have the box and the adapter that came with it too
So, right this moment, $265 plus $10 for shipping in USA. Sweet deal.
BTW that rebate is an especially pain in the as there is BOTH an online form AND a mail in form that BOTH need to be filled/sent.
And for rep, take a look at me, nausetdave on Ebay. -
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
Very glad to know
Thanks for the very pleasant response and good luck
-
Yeah, you will love it! SSD's are the best. I recommend a fresh install to get the max out of your new SSD.
Let us know when you get it and fire it up. -
Please use the Marketplace forum Cape.

LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
SSDs are the best..... agreed. I'm looking to get the best of the best
Yep. I often do secure erase before OS install.
Cheers! -
Whoops, sorry. Not used to trying to sell here, will do.
-
Thanks.
So secure Erase is still only possible with Linux and hotplugging? -
Phil there is a good chance you can use HDDerase 3.3 but it's all up to your BIOS to not lock the disk...
-
Thanks, I might try that later.
-
Has anyone here used the " Tony-Trim" method and what are your thoughts? It looks like my Samsung in my HP doesn't support TRIM, at least not according to "Crystal Disk Info". Another user reported theirs does and he provided a screenshot as proof.
If HP doesn't come through and offer either an SSD swap or firmware update, which either is highly unlikely based on other user experiences, I guess I'll have to look at alternatives. I can't sell the drive really because it has an HP specific firmware. I'm sure it'd work fine in another laptop though. But maybe that will be an option if I can get a decent amount for it.
Either way if I can't get any resolution from HP, what are user experiences with Tony-TRIM? Looks like a decent alternative that requires manual input, but not sure of its real implications?
Thanks. -
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
Tried using AS Cleaner (aka Tony Trim) on my Sammy before and it didn't do any good (got even worst if memory serves right).
PS: Mine is VBM9LD1Q (not an HP one) -
What program are you using for secure erase?
I have two 32gb x25-E's, by the way, in RAID-0. Lemme know what program/numbers you want to see, and I'll do it. You guys have been very helpful thus far, and I want to help with numbers since there aren't many of us with the x25-E's SLC flash. -
hankaaron57, using the CrystalDiskMark for the 4k random reads you should see at least 23MB/s and for the writes more than 60MB/s, for you especially with the RAID0 that number should be much bigger (if you can see mine a few posts back, with the R1, it was 70MB/s)
Thanks for trying btw -
So whats everybody running as far as virus scanners on there ssds ?Im running avast and it seems to have extended the start up time quit a bit .Whats the best one for speed AVIRA, AVASTor AVG ?I have done all the tweeks posted and i think now its taking longer to start up.Thanks
-
The best one for speed is no virus scanner. That's what I do.
When I tested them Avira seemed to be the fastest. Well after the first update that is, and after disabling the annoying popup. -
MS Security Essentials is working well for me.
-
So has anybody else tested this to see witch one runs the fastest and if you run your laptop without it what do you use to run scans from time to time?
-
I tested Avast vs. AVG vs. Avira. Differences were negligible. Avira won though.
Since it also has the best protection, I'd go with avira. -
found this benchmark of scanners

You may want to hold off until 10.6.5, as the 10.6.4 has updated OS X's TRIM implementation (yet to be executed, of course). We could possibly see TRIM support being flipped on in 10.6.5.
-
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
Not worth to buy since it does not have any warranty. -
Is there a set release date for 10.6.5 ?
-
OCZ say they don't give warranty w/o receipt but I've heard from several people that they do.
This was for Europe though, don't know about US. -
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
Yep. Heard that before but what concerns me is the seller (japanwin) told me the SSD has no warranty
Not sure why
Drive will come unmarked without any label on them. They are BRAND NEW pulled from NEW Servers.
