Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
-
hi guys, im planning to pick up an SSD tomorrow, since my Notebook will only reach me by Monday, wonders which SSD should i pick up? was looking at the New Samsung SSD it looks great,
im new to the SSD market and know nuts about them. (TRIM*?)
-
Tough choice. Either a Sandforce drive like Vertex 2, or the Corsair Nova or the Samsung 470. I'd probably get the Nova if it's cheap.
The Crucial only reaches those speeds on SATA III. -
I love my Nova!
-
Well you are the one to judge because if I recall correctly you also tried the Vertex 2, sold it and kept your Nova.
-
i will keep a look out on Corsair Nova and Samsung 470 SSDs. how do i know if they will work on my NP7280?
im planning to reinstall my Window 7 Ultimate and the other drivers on my N7280 once it reaches me but have no idea on how to do those need advice guys~
Edit: was at Newegg web for some price list on Corsair Nova and happens to read the review of recent. many had to RMA the Product for 128GB Corsair Nova..
and Samsung had been doing well for now.. -
Keep in mind that Techreport is only one source. Many other websites rate the Sandforce drives (Vertex 2, Agility 2, Corsair Force etc) above the Corsair Nova.
These 2.5" SSDs will all work on your Sager. A clean install is a good idea. -
Yes Phil, good memory! I am still waiting for the new Intel or better, but until then, I am completely happy with the Nova. I wish Indilinx would do something to get back on the map. They really had a good first horse out of the gate!
-
Hello,
To help you understand a bit what are TRIM, ITGC and all that funny stuff, I invite you to take a look here; should help you getting in the bus !
And when you'll be enjoying your SSD, may I kindly suggest you follow the advice given here; should help you keeping you baby healthy and clean !
Cheers !

im gonna go look around with my friend at my Local IT shops for Samsung's SSD 470 series.
will return back here with info if i find it~
-
Cool thanks. My math was a little off in my estimations of how much drive life I had used. If that tool is accurate, I feel even more comfortable using the drive.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Are Samsung SSD sold retail? Or only OEM? -
As far asI know, only OEM; but there may be some folks able to sell some retail...
-
I'm not so sure but it seems that newegg have them on their web store.
-
appreciate the help there!
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Well at Microcenter we only carry Samsung OEM drives. I haven't actually found anywhere that sells retail Samsung. They are a huge OEM provider so I guess that would make sense. -
MicroCenter RULES!
-
Tested the new Samsung 30nm drive and it blew away the others (Crucial SATA3/OWC/Intel). Every test confirmed what the other was showing to be concluded with Vantage x64 which gave the Sammy over 40000 marks. The next closest was the Crucial with only 34000.

If by 'tested' you mean benchmarked?
Not enough information presented!
-
You mean the Samsung 470? Yeah it looks like a winner.
-
As someone else here said, "I love my Nova" !!!
Don't be so quick to write them off. Customer reviews of all brands show RMAs. Mine runs great and was only $219 for 128GB. A great deal in my estimation considering the Intel I had cost a bit more for only 80GB. I ditched the Intel due to declining performance. -
New to this thread and have been reading and reading... My OEM SSD is a Toshiba 250GB THNS256668BBAA. From what I have read so far, no one who participates here owns one. Any opinions? No TRIM and no GC I believe. Not Indilinx. WEI score of 6.8. Would I be a good candidate for Tonytrim? I've heard mixed reviews. Is this second generation? Do not use CCleaner- wipe MFT space correct? I did this once and from what I have not read not a good idea. Any input and/or information would be appreciated.
And some help with interpreting these numbers. Thank you. -
Fishon, installing Intel RST driver helps performance.

Les has posted his Samsung 470 review:
http://thessdreview.com/ -
Very interesting SSD review Les.
By the way, the fact that the Samsung is 256GB and the others are smaller tends to skew PC Mark Vantage results. For example, a 240GB Sandforce drive gets higher scores than a 120GB, as far as I know.
The difference with Crucial drives is even larger. The 256GB is much faster than the 128GB, while the 128GB is faster than the 64GB. -
What's the power consumption on the new samsung drive Les?
-

Fishon,
I do not know what the drive is 'supposed' to bench at.
What I can guess though is that this drive operates at just slightly above the best mechanical/hybrid notebook drives available now. (For the 'interpreting the numbers' part of your question).
As to using the tonytrim method - I vote NO!
Same with the ccleaner 'solution'.
Have heard of drives getting (much) worse with the above 'advice', instead of showing an improvement. Remember that the tonytrim method is for a specific OCZ SSD (indilinux?) and is not generally applicable to any SSD.
Hope others can help with your other inquiries. -
Hmmm... You might want to check out what the latest that I just posted and consider the final para. The results are skewed only in the case of certain SSDs IMHO and is dependant on the number of die within each NAND chip. For example, the C300 64GB contains NAND chips with 1 die per leaving us with a write speed of roughly 70MB/s whereas the 256GB version has NAND chips with 4 die per chip and now multiplying the write speeds as such to the highest available. So... it all depends on the number of die within NAND. This also explains very simply why the Intel only reached at 80/100MB/s on the X25m. Many thought there was a cap but it was actually the quality of the NAND itself. Here is a good read for this.
I have been approached by 3 oems now trying to find a right way to get this out regarding the new F/W. It appears to be much easily attainable from larger companies than smaller and there have been rumours of smaller oems buying from larger rather than SF themselves to get it in their new SSDs. This is a great move by SF for the consumer, if true.
Wow...informative day now eheh. And hey... for 'he' who stated 'not enough info', I am but one person looking for help if interested and I understood even when I created this thread that I did not even come close to the knowledge of those who would make this home. Hmmm Created a thread to get the smart guys here to learn from.... I guess Im not so dumb ehehe. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Toshiba has SSDs? Are they just another brand and they rebrand them? -
I can't really help you translate the numbers other than that your sequential writes are quite nice compared to mine. Here are the same benchs that you did, but with my SSD so that you can get a side by side.

States here it's their own controller: Toshiba's own 43nm multi-channel MLC controller is used in conjunction with Toshiba MLC NAND

Eh I like my SF-1200 controller! And I don't touch any Toshiba products with a 10000 foot pole. But can't be any worse than JMicron...they are just terribad. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Les,
sorry, I'm just a dumb 'he' who didn't realize that you had a link included in your signature.
I'm off to the corner now with my gum on my nose and my nose against the wall.
-
Well you probably right but that doesn't change my point. A Sandforce 120GB gets a higher Vantage Score than a Sandforce 60GB. Even though they have the same write speeds.
So if you want to compare SSDs based on the Vantage Score, they should be of the same size in my opinion.
But why relying on synthetic benchmarks if you can test the real thing? -
Indeed. To expand that, even other people's real life scenario may not apply to one's usage.
I bought a Sandforce(based on review, real world usage recommendation), had a little problem and returned it after learning that using it requires me to change my work pattern in order to effectively utilize it(kind of negate any speed advantage it has over x25m) and settle with x25m. -
I agree totally that real life scenarios are the best when the time is available to spend on the review. Credit to your reviews for such as a matter of fact.
Unfortunately, drives have to be returned and cannot be tested with new methodology. -
Can anyone with a Kingston V+ please post a HDtune screenshot at default settings?
-
Second that. I cannot believe anything that says : "Hey I can do 290MB/s when you write on me 0s or 1s"
Les thank you for the Sammy 470 review. I would happily exchange my C300 256GB that have in my XPS1530 for a Samsung 470 256GB !!
Reading a review of Samsung 470 in hardwareluxx.de I am thinking of getting four 470 64GB for raid0 setup for my desktop (currently I have 2 spinners @ raid0). Their garbage collector is awesome : [User-Review] Koreanischer Leckerbissen: Samsung 470 Series SSD (Update 11.09.2010) - Forum de Luxx These kind of GC is a must for raid setups, where trim is absent. -
The mentioned review "Koreanischer Leckerbissen...." is very optimistic regarding the AS SSD Copy benchmark.
There is another review at Hardwareluxx Hardwareluxx - Test: Samsung SSD 470 Series - zurück an die Spitze? where the score for the copy benchmark is around 100 MB/s lower.
But nevertheless it seems this a step forward for Samsung SSDs. -
Agree totally with both except....
As much as testing 'according to the way manufacturers get their numbers' by use of things such as ATTO and Crystal oFill are an unrealistic portrayal of every day speeds, the same can be said of AS SSD and Crystal in random mode on SF drives.
When I test a Intel or Crucial beside and SF drive using Crystal in random mode, the SF drive has very low results and appears to be inferior acording to the performance scores...by far in fact.
Now, when you put them in Vantage tests, it all comes out in the wash and we see how close they are. As much as Vantage tests aren't real scenarios, they are synthetic that mimic real scenarios and the program is used throughout by many oems to test their ssds.
I know of one specifically that can rattle offf the HDD suite scores for every one of their ssds.
Agreed that real life testing is the best if the variables are all there though. -
I'm still a bit leary with Samsung drives. They were supposed to have excellent GC. I had one without TRIM and while it looked like it would "clean" itself, it went to hell. Check out this thread here:

Any word on Samsung's next controller? I'm going to need to buy my father a new computer within a year, and inevitably my only option from most OEMs is going to be Samsung. I'm not opposed to putting in a different drive myself, but that means that my father needs to call me if something goes wrong, rather than the OEM.
-
I believe the 470 *is* Samsung's next controller...
-
Yup it is...
-
so um, is this bad?
this is for a gen 1 intel 80GB i run a 20 gb database on along with Vista ...so it gets some decent use.
I was really shocked to see iwas down to 57% health..
smart details link--> HDD Life OnLine -
I just checked and found that Intel has had a firmware upgrade out for a little while now. It's for the G1 drives and is supposed to proved TRIM support.

Unless the author detail how he calculates the life, I don't know how people can interpret that number. Intel's drive is quoted in terms of total byte written(for example a G2 80G is guranteed for 7TB though Intel said it can actually last more than that).
