So I've got this old Acer 3680 which I use exactly 3 times a year as a navigation computer in a van. Unfortunately this past January I neglected to warm up the laptop before turning it on, and trashed the hard disk.
I didn't want to spend a ton of cash fixing it, and don't need a heck of a lot of space, so I opted for a Kingspec 32GB SSD (KSD-PA18.1-032MJ) as a replacement. The drive arrived today, and I've been beating my head against it ever since.
Seems that if the both the SSD and the CDROM (tsst ts-l462d) are attached, the system has problems. If I pull the SSD I can boot a linux livecd no problem. If I take out the cdrom, I can talk to the SSD. Plug em both in, nothing works (actually things *sorta* work, but eventually crap out).
I've verified that the SSD is master and the cdrom is slave, even experimented with various jumper settings in case the label was lying ..
Anyone got any ideas?

What do you mean by "eventually crap out". Did you do a fresh install of Windows (assuming XP?), or just clone it from a backup image? Can you boot into Windows or does it even make it that far?

long delays at boot trying to detect drives (when both are installed, no delays when only one is installed)
windows installer and ubuntu livecd both fail to start if both devices installed, work fine if ssd is removed -
weird .. so I have a 16G SuperTalent that I was using in another box .. plugged that into the Acer, works fine with the hard disk. Plug the Kingspec 32G back in, hard disk light on solid and neither drive works. Luckily the Kingspec works fine in the other box ..
SSD and optical drive don't get along
