HI! Curently i have my asus g1, but asap the new macbook comes out, im gonna get it. I guess that it wont come with ssd even if customized, so id like to get one (possibly from newegg). First of all i want it to prevent hdd breaking (gonna travel a bit) and just to get some improved speed. So what do you think is the best ssd to get not spending TOO much and getting enough space for OS X+boot camps Win OS(i also have my external 750gb hdd) +music library and other stuff (nothing special like video ad or "photoshop"ing gonna be done.
Sry for possibe mistakes, english isnt native lang. ^^

The best SSD at the moment is Intel X25-M. Here's a review by Laptopmag. In that review you can see how it compares to the Scorpio Black, a 320GB/7200rpm drive. It will cost $650 for 80GB.
" The Intel X25-M is quite simply the fastest notebook hard drive we've seen to date. "
If that's too expensive I recommend taking a fast 320GB/7200rpm drive or wait for the Seagate 7200.4 500GB which should be coming out soon. -
Definitely consider the 320GB 7200rpm drive. I have a ThinkPad T400 with a 64GB SSD. I like it so far but I can easily understand how someone may not think the premium is worthwhile.
If ruggedness is a concern you may want to look into notebooks with an alloy shell/chassis.
BTW, the Intel drive is an MLC, right? Personally, I prefer SLC drives because they have been around longer. -
I think this price is TOPS for me (cheaper - better) , but i hope in about 3-4 months i might get 160gb for this money (if not -too bad), but as i red on the review "Not available for retail purchase", hope that will chage soon. Also gonna look if something good will come out ) Thanks

Depending on what you are willing to pay, you might want to wait for the X25-E. (The SLC version of the X25-M). No word on sizes, but reported read/write performance will be 250 mb/s read and 170 mb/s write.
The X25-M will only have 70 mb/s write, which is fairly mediocre given its high premium. (a Veloci-raptor writes closer to 100mb/s) -
If you do not mind it being MLC you can get a 128GB OCZ Core for under $500.

I think my price range is going to be 6xx$ if worth it, ofc ~500$ would be the best. Also im curious about the mlc-slc cycles, How long is actually 100k or 10k cycles (is MLC gonna last for 2 years? Of regular office work, some gaming + media).
Maybe it'll be even better to get good MLC one, and then after a year-year 'n half they all will get cheaper to switch to a better+bigger slc one... -
For regular work, I expect AT LEAST 5+ years -
O thats cool. Also looked the ssd prices graph (2008-2010) It should drop a bit more by the end of the year (thats when i gonna get laptop).. might be nice to., cuz good ssd with 160gb for ~500$ would be nice *Hoping*
Now just gonna do some research about mlc vs slc and the overall performance possible to get/use.
SSD drive instead of hdd, smallest that makes sense
