I seem to be getting conflicting information about the install of a SSD. Is there a certain why that you have to do it that differs from installing a normal HHD?

No. I replaced the 500GB HDD in my W520 with the 160GB SSD in my sig and there's nothing different about it. Same SATA connector, same 2.5" form factor, fits the same rubber rails, etc.

However, some (small) laptops use 7mm tall drives instead of the standard 9mm tall drives, which means that you would have to order a special HDD/SSD thats 7mm tall. What model laptop do you have?

unlike privatejarhead's experience, I had to load drivers for mine when I installed win7 (pretty much just looking for the driver on the cd that came with my laptop).

after that was a 10 minute install of windows 7 and onto the desktop :D

Well, I did install the Intel SSD Toolbox afterwards.... >.>

Wouldn't the generic Win7 HDD driver(s) work with the HDD, instead of having to install drivers yourself?

Generic win 7 drivers couldn't detect it for some reason, AHCI was turned on bios as well. but it wasn't really a problem after i loaded the drivers from the dvd that came with it.
