At the moment I want to upgrade my Sony Vaio Z's HDD to an SSD. Currently I'm looking at the OCZ Summit 60GB model on sale for around $247 CAD Tax & Shipping Included. The problem is with all the news of the new Intel SSD line coming out I was wondering if I should wait a bit until Intel releasing more info about their new SSD.

Budget: Looking to spend $200-$300 CAD Tax and Shipping Included.

    Question is,
1)Is this a decent price for the OCZ Summit 60GB?
2)Should I wait for the new Intel SSD or will they be out of budget.
3)Are the OCZ Summit 60GB SSD any good?

    Thanks,

OCZ summit is a pretty good drive. Intels and indilinx drives (ocz vertex) are probably better.

It's a good drive. But if you know anything about technology, it's always getting better. You either buy stuffs now or never. If you need it, then I recommend that you get it.

    1) I think it's a bit high of a price
    2) Intel's will be out of budget still
    3) Summit uses the Samsung controller which is very good

where do you buy it? i see some intel 80gb for 309$ on ebay (depends of course on the delivery rate). so for a 60gb disk you should be able to find prices around 230$+. as said, depends on delivery costs.

on another note, i see 60gb vertex for 205$, 60gb summit for 230$.

but as always, if it's worth your money, buy it. there's no best time. it will always get cheaper tomorrow.

Davepermen - I recall one of your posts recently suggesting Intel were to release some new offerings/pricing which I took meant a shakeup/reprice of SSDs in the whole market. Even suggesting waiting a "few weeks". Can you elaborate?

Well the $309 on ebay is most likely in USD so I would need to convert it to CAD to compare with teh price on the Summit atm.

The price would be around $246 with the shipping costs... but someone above did say that the new intel SSD regardless of the new technology would still be out of budget.

jup. everything's gonna be cheaper in like 6 months. and 6 months later, too, etc..

    to nando4:

yes, but it looks like it won't be that week :( some rumour that may have some intel connections stated "in a week". but at latest, in some months, the 320gb version will come. question is, do they release early? and how will the pricing be for the new drives. and are they faster than before?

Well hopefully it will be cheaper lol. I'm going to pass on the SSD for now... I'm either going to be hitting myself or thanking myself in a few weeks when/if they announce the new SSD line.

Do you have the RiDATA SSD? Sounds like a Jmicron SSD, which I would stay away from.
