I've got a Vaio-Z and changed the toshiba HDD to SSD (Super Talent Ultradrive 64gb). I used the recovery discs to install Vista business. Everything is running OK, I'm happy with the improvements in speed and quietness.

However there is a problem :( Vista seems to randomly freeze/crash. I'm able to move the mouse around, and do some stuff like clicking the start menu / closing some open programs (the others are just freezed), but cannot run any new application, even the task manager. The only thing i can do in the end is to turn the power off.

    Any ideas whats wrong?

edit: Model: Super Talent UltraDrive ME MLC 64GB (STT_FTM64GX25H)

That's called stuttering and pausing..it's a common problem with these brand of ssd controllers. Much discussed already in the New SSD thread.

if you want no stuttering you need a SSD with non Jmicron controller like the vertex or intel SSD

Is that an Ultradrive ME? That one has the Indilinx controller (same as ocz vertex and g.skill falcon) and shouldn't have the stuttering issue like the jmicrons. Have you done any of the tweaks such as disabling indexing?

SSD's are not balanced these days .. they are in begining of balancing
it's like early phase of new type of storage and need 1-2 years to tune in
    and stabilise ...
manufacturers selling them too early to make money ...

What is the model/line of the Super Talent SSD you have? LE/ME shouldn't have issues, but OX/RX/PX/BX might.

BTW SSDs aren't a new storage technology, it's the controller that is the issue.

The model is Super Talent UltraDrive ME MLC 64GB (STT_FTM64GX25H). I have disabled indexing. Anything else I could try?

Have you ran any benchmarks? I wonder if you have low random read/writes or something? Try CrystalDiskMark and/or HDTune.

    Crystaldiskmark run OK:

    Code:

    CrystalDiskMark 2.2 (C) 2007-2008 hiyohiyo

I tried to run HDtune two times and both times it got at 20% mark and then frozed (just the way i described
in the initial post)... Though i was able to copy the results at that point:

    Code:
    HD Tune: STT_FTM64GX25H Benchmark

    Transfer Rate Minimum : 138.0 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 167.4 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average :
    Access Time :
    Burst Rate :
    CPU Usage :

And just when i had posted those results (after it recovered from hdtune stuttering) I got a blue screen: KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR ... whats going on :(

Yeah i would try a fresh install of Vista and only use recovery for drivers. ur drive is not jmicron and shouldn't have stuttering... Maybe u should have indexing enabled as well...

Yes but you may lose all data on the drive at least that is how vertex (uses same controller) worked. And i remember the first round of vertexes had all sorts of problems do to immature firmware and from what people say are now all straightened out

Just to update if anyone else is having this problem: I enabled indexing and have had no problems since! Thanks Mormegil83 :)

Even HDtune ran through for the first time:

    Code:
    HD Tune: STT_FTM64GX25H Benchmark

    Transfer Rate Minimum : 135.3 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 200.2 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 156.3 MB/sec
    Access Time : 0.2 ms
    Burst Rate : 131.0 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 28.3%
