ok, I'v made my mind up I am getting an SSD
this upgrade is primarily to increase responsiveness and boot times over a standard Hard drive.
I don't do much random r/w so the lag issue with SteadyState shouldn't be a big deal, atleast I don't think.
here is what I think I need
minimum 60GB
minimum 100MB/s read
minimum 60MB/s write
if 60(4)GB ~<230 CAD ~180USD
if 120(8) ~< 280 CAD ~ 240USD
Right now I am leaning towards the OCZ Core V2 60GB one, what else is out there that I should know have.
prefferred etailers are

ncix.com

Get the supertalent MX drives, I haven't had any problems with them. Here's the 128 GB that I had in my Thinkpad T400 before I bought the G.skill Titan 256 GB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609333
I didn't suffer from any stuttering on this drive and I didn't have to apply any tweaks. -
Plenty of drives in that price range. GSkill 64GB is on sale this week at NCIX, and you could go with an OCZ Solid as well.
You may want to try aligning the partitions (assuming you're going to use XP) before doing a fresh OS install. -
If you're willing to go higher, this drive has prove to be a very solid performer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231242

I am looking for a Canadian reseller to get a price on the supertalent, newegg canada doesn't have it listed. it looks a little expensive but if it's as good as the newegg reviewers claims it'll be worth it.
and goofBall I'll be using Vista. -
assuming you're willing to pay, the Titan 128GB is a good buy. If it came in 64GB and available, I would probably get one. I might just wait for the Apex now.

as of yet I can't find the SuperTalent for sale anywhere(I haven't yet tried Ebay) but does anyone know if this:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=34721&vpn=FM-25S2S-64GB&manufacture=G.SKILL
G.Skill 64GB (on saie)
does this suffer from studdering? It doesn't matter to much I just want to know what to expect.
still open for suggestions!
Thank's everyone so far!
Update :the 128GB super talent is out, I just can't find a Canadian reseller. -
found the same one for cheaper...

anyone know anything about this device? -
I have a 120GB OCZ CoreV2, and it stutters/hangs quite a lot. I just ordered a Titan 256GB yesterday, will see how it behaves.
-
no one has the G.Skill 64GB? hmm... I might be the first... around here...
-
I have the G.Skill 128GB version of the G.Skill drive you listed a link for. It's working out fine right now, but I did go ahead and perform alot of the posted tweaks on the OZ forums to makes sure I won't suffer any stutering. So far it's great. Load times are much faster and games have very little load time between missions compared to before.
I'm not sure how to go about purchasing a drive for shipping to Canada though. -

@jedisolo
Can you give me any info about SATA limitation on T400 - what are max r/w speeds achieved - under or over 150 MB/s?
In some posts people are talking about limitation of max transfer speed on Thinkpads due to a power saving.
I would like to know this for sure before I decide what SSD to buy.
Thanks! -
so T61p and early maybe.
T400/T500 and newer are supposed to be fine. -
@yuio
thanks for confirmation! I'm planning to buy 2 SSD's from last generation (MLC with r/w speed 200/160) to upgrade my T400, still waiting for some of them to be available in area (middle Europe - Croatia).
It will be definitelly big improvement from 5400rpm HDD to something like G.Skill or OCZ Apex/Vertex. -
Yah, I finally ordered it! now I am part of the cool people (the ones with SSD's!) jk!
SSD time!
