I know needs are individual, but do you think 256gb is the new standard size SSD?

For $50, would you upgrade from 128gb to 256gb?

I figure 128GB is good for OS and programs, but 256gb would ameliorate the need for an external drive for media.

I believe that 256 GB is now the standard because the cost of a 128 GB SSD drive back then (2 to 3 years ago) is what it cost for a 256 GB SSD today. Also, I have been using most of the space on my 128 GB and I will eventually get a 256 GB SSD due to it being cheaper to get now.

I started with 256 but anticipated that I would need to upgrade later. Sure enough with barely 75% of my software installed I had to switch to something larger.

I know I have a lot of editing suites, but if you're a lot more conservative with programs then 256 should be more than enough.
