Is this a basic hardware component of a notebook computer? Happy jumping :)

On the iPod (garbage) bandwagon that is.

ipods arent all that bad. its itunes music thats garbage about them.
its not like a new update will totally decimate your old ipod. only reason im considering turnin in the old 30 gig for a 160 is so i can have more high quality music.

It depends on how you will use it. If it does everything you need it to do at a price you find reasonable and you need a portable media player right now then go for it. If on the other hand you can wait a few months and see what the next generation might bring then wait. Yet another option is get a cheap, get you by machine, perhaps a Shuffle (or not an Apple brand model at all) just to get you by for the next half year until the next generation options are established.

For me personally, I won't consider an Apple iPod until they are wide screen (like the Touch model I believe) and have 2 Bluetooth protocols built-in (no kludgey adapters needed, thank you) called A2DP and AVRCP. The first allows stereo music to stream to wireless headphones and the second makes buttons on the headphones control transport/volume of the portable from across the room or while it is buried in a briefcase, like my etymotic ETY8's have.

I have a cheapo Insignia brand model with all these features (except wide screen) acting as my "get you by for now model". It also has drag-and-drop without iTunes intervention, FM, records from a line in or FM, takes SDHC expansion cards, and has no DRM restrictions that I know of.

You have to remember apple makes new ipods EVERY year. Get it now if it has what you want at the price at you want.
