Hi, I was defragging my hard drive and I knew it would take a while. Well I set my alarm but it never went off. So when I went to take a nap ( It was 10pm and I was tired) My laptop lid was open why it was defraging. 6 hours later, I woke up and my laptop lid was still open and on. Could that have done nay damage to my screen, hdd, etc?

If the same image was there on the screen for 6 hrs, maybe you could get a stuck pixel?

But if you have a screensaver or if the screen turns off by itself after a while, then I think it's ok.

Well the screen saver went on. But could I really damage a pixel if I left it on the same image for 6 hours or more?

Try use the setting that will turn off the screen after a period of inactivity; say 10-15 mins.

No, you did not damage anything. Its basically similar using it for 6 hours straight.

If you kept the exact same image for like 2 weeks straight the image gets burnt into the LCD screen.

Some of the older LCD's i have at work have the Windows Start bar burnt into the screen.

    You are fine.

I leave the PSP on 24-7 (screen too!) with the Internet radio playing, Same image, and the screen is fine after 2+ years... :) Where i live, we do not get cell service, or FM...

Same thing with the Ultrasharp-1707FP on the deskptop, the screen saver comes on after 8min, but the screen never shuts off....

On my latitude, i have the screen saver to come on after 5min, and after 20min, the screen turns off.

You could have left your laptop on for 24-hours or more with the same image on screen and absolutely nothing would have happened.

Well, it's not going to burn into the screen. IMO it's just a waste of power (a la: don't leave things on when you're not using them).

As far as I am aware the danger of burning images into screen is pretty much non-existent with LCD displays.

You possibly "used up" some of your LCD's life - CCFL or LED & the LCD - but then considering they are designed for 30.000h or so nowadays its not something you'd care about.

Burn in is possible with an LCD - if you go to the airport, all the TVs showing departure/arrival schedules have serious burn in issues, regardless of whether they're LCD or plasma. It takes closer to 6 weeks or 6 months than 6 hours to do it though...

    Are you sure?

I don't remember any burn in at Düsseldorf Airport... and I'm sure they are LCD...

I have seen burn in on TVs at Newcastle International Airport - but I suspect they are plasmas.

    Plasmas definitely can burn in.

Not sure if this thread is actually going anywhere, but no point saying 'I've seen this' and 'I'm sure of this'.

I highly doubt that leaving the LCD on for six hours is going to damage it badly, but as a precaution I would set the screen to turn off after 10 or 15 minutes, as it will save it's lifespan and will save power.

There's a program called "Turn Off LCD" for manually turning off the LCD at that exact second.
I use it because I always set "Never" in power option :p
