I know that overclocking boosts the performance of a videocard considerably. I'd love to do it to my new i9300's Go 6800, but I have this fear in the back of my mind that something will go wrong.
Is it safe to overclock a small bit? Will it void my warranty permanently, or could I set it back to normal if anything ever happened? What are some safe numbers to overclock it to?
I have the Xtreme-G MobileForce drivers, just downloaded yesterday. I would like to overclock and run 3dmarks but only if there is no possibility that something could get damaged. I know absolutely nothing about overclocking so I came here. Thanks in advance.

Just a note here,
I just did a manual overclock and had it detect the optimal settings, and it set it to 359/729. This sounds really high compared to the stock settings. I got a 3dmarks score of 4219. Is it safe to leave my card at these settings? I set them back to stock (no overclocking) just to be safe until I find out a bit more after overclocking. -
the 6800 core is considered a very safe chip to overclock, but i dont recommned doing it unless you really need those extra 5-10 fps in your games. I run 365/755 and my temperature is only a few degrees higher then stock.

What exactly are the effects of slightly overclocking like that? If the chip only gets a bit hotter, is there any risk of damaging anything?

Rock,
With the stock clocks it is severly underclocked by Dell. So OC'ing it doesn't hurt much as long as you keep an eye on the temp. Damaging is a maybe if you don't watch the temp as long as you didn't volt mod it. -
What's the best way to monitor the temp? I know you can view it somewhere...but is there any sort of freeware program that will post the stats on my desktop? I've seen a program before that posted info like that on the desktop, although it was for CPU I believe.
So running the gpu at 360/730 wouldn't hurt much? I'm just terrified that something will happen, but if theres very little possibility of damage at such low overclocking, then I won't be as uhh reluctant, I guess. -

No, that shouldn't be bad. You can download I9kfangui or I8kfangui to monitor your temps. They will display on the taskbar.

Thanks, USA.
Any recommendation of one of those over the other? I9k or I8k? -

Well in order to get I9kfangui you have to download I8kfangui...then when you DL the i9k it will upgrade the i8k. Make sure you find the one for the I9300...it will be on the website when you are looking it will say I9300 compatable. Good luck...let me know how it goes.
Safe to overclock?
