    Safe to run notebook with the lid closed?

    I have my DV5t connected to an external LCD and I am running a logitech wireless keyboard/mouse setup. The HP media remote lets me the notebook on with the lid closed so I have been using it this way as a quasi desktop.

    I just realized things can get hot under there and with the lid closed the LCD is getting baked.

    Anybody have a LCD suffer from heat damage? Dark spots? etc?

    Yeah I wouldn't do that, I believe the heat can cause ghosting. You could just close it about a 30 degree angle or so.

    I haven't seen it on my computer, but my Samsung LCD TV has some dark areas down the center from it getting too warm. (Full brightness, Game Mode, and Summer didn't mix too well.)

    I wouldnt do it...

    buy one of the docking stations for 100$ then you get to use that display also!

    I wouldn't do that either. The heat can couse issues after time. I would just keep the lid open, but turn the Screen/LCD off.
    I have used HP's DV serie, and I know those are running hot.

    In general I don't really think this is a problem if you don't have a machine that runs excessively warm in the first place. Dell has been making docking devices designed to run notebooks with the lid shut for years, and there haven't been (at least not to my knowledge) any real problems associated with this.

    But as mentioned, if you've got a hot laptop, it may not be a good idea. Telling the machine to shut off the screen when it's closed may help, though.

    I would try to refrain from doing that, personally. I have heard way too many bad stories about people who have done, and their LCD coincidentally getting extremely washed out within the first year of use.

    There was actually a member on this forum, who did what you did. Apparently, a blanket was thrown over the laptop by someone else, and when he came back, the screen was tinged a light green colour. Of course, without a blanket sealing in heat, it won't happen as fast, but it will still have an effect.

    The Dv5t is a rather hot notebook in the first place, so all the more incentive not to do it.

    a few years back i had a laptop that managed to wake itself up while it was in a bag and run on for several hours. screen was ok but there was ghosting in the shape of the keyboard that never came off :(
    i keep 'wake on wireless/lan' disabled now ;)
