    Hello

Looking at upgrading the hard drive to one of those new western digital scorpio 7200 Rpm drives perferably the 320gig version. Currently have samsung hm160JI ATA drive inside right now. Just wondering if my system compatiable with these new drives as when i looked inside my laptop i dont have a sata connection just a normal fixed plug you push your harddrive in and out off.

    Thanks. :)

I think the HM160JI is a SATA HDD, but does your laptop have an adapter sort of thing or are you unaware of how a SATA port looks..??

I did a Google search and John talked about it and said he got the SATA version which just leaves me confused. You can install SiSoftSandra for free will tell you SATA or PATA. The other sites said SATA.

yup, that is a sata port adaptor. The Samsung JI is the SATA version, the HI is the ATA version.
However the JI does have a single 160gb platter, so it has speeds of 52mb/sec. Even upgrading to the fastest 320gb 7200rpm drive you will not notice a huge performance difference.
Simply remove the harddrive and it will say what type it it.
If the harddrive is for your M57u in your signature, than it is definitely a Sata drive.

Ok, I guess it will be a SATA HDD (since K-Tron has confirmed that :p)
Just found an image on google, it shows how a laptop SATA port to which the HDD is connected, looks.. :D

Maybe not 'huge' but in my opinion it's certainly worth it. The HM160JI is quite an average performer with an average read of 35.7 Mb/sec and acces times of 18ms.

If you'd upgrade to a Hitachi 7K200 200GB or a WD 320GB/7200rpm you will notice an increase in speed.

Check out the application benchmarks here:

Oh, sorry guys, phil is right about the speeds of the JI, I made a simple mistake with modeling codes. I confused the JI and the JC. The JC is able to do 52mb/sec.
So yeah upgrading to a 320gb 5400rpm drive or a 200gb or larger 7200rpm drive will show a rather large performance increase.
