My 2 y/o laptop LCD screen was working fine until the backlight wouldn't come on one day. Can I salvage it by replacing the backlight inverter or is this a problem within the LCD screen itself?

Oh, I forgot to mention, the backlight type is CCFL. I got it occasionally working. But, when it did the backlight slowly came on with flickering like in a fluorescent tube. Would the problem be with the backlight and not the inverter?

Almost impossible to tell. Basically you would need another inverter to test the panel with and not all of them are same. Or another panel, where the plug in the cables temporarily. Easy to do if you have boxes full of spare parts around, not that much if you need to buy/borrow everything.
