I have an opportunity to buy a 1.8" Samsun SSD from a polish auction website: DYSKI SSD 128GB MLC 1,8" uSATA SAMSUNG Tanio! (1253661384) - Aukcje internetowe Allegro. The firmware version is VBM24D1Q with trim.

There are pictures of transfer rates at the bottom which makes it seem ok.

However I'm unsure of suttering/freezing issues. Do you recommend buying this drive? I'm mainly looking for imporvement in boot time and application starting (not really concerned about moving large files etc)

I have the 256GB 1.8" version of this drive. It is a balanced performer and seems to offer me good battery life improvements.
Compared to the 5400RPM drive i once had i noticed all those things that you're looking for. I'm very happy with it, but i'm not a power user.
However, as i mentioned it is a balanced performer and the 1.8 Intel drive and the OCZ drives are better performers.
I'm not 100% sure which is the lowest power performer as 1.8" microsata drives are unheralded and we can only base our assumptions on how the 2.5 variants perform. Also, we need to go of manufacturers specs and limited user feedback.
However, power consumption doesn't appear to be a concern for you.
The OCZ Vertex 2 is the best performing microsata 1.8 drive.

You might want to look at this post as it contains more benchmarks for the Samsung drive.

Thanks for the answer. I'm also not a power user and I really only want the things I listed. I really hate when I boot the laptop from battery and it takes a long time for all things to load (despite optimizing start-up programs etc). An improvement in battery life would be nice to.

Just one more question. Would it be possible to make a clone of my current HDD (which has 3 partitions) and clone them ontot the new 1.8" SSD? Would it be possible with software like this: Complete hard disk recovery solution, backup, drive copy, clone and image computer software

Would all Recovery/ files work like on the old drive after disc cloning?

I've only used Norton Ghost 14 and i've never able to clone over a recovery partition. Everything else was fine though.
May be someone else has more input.
