Samsung Introduces Industry’s First 1 Terabyte mSATA SSD
The new 840 EVO mSATA (mini-Serial ATA) Solid State Drive (SSD) line-up includes the industry’s first 1 terabyte (TB) mSATA SSD.
• The 1TB mSATA SSD's thickness and weight are approximately 40 percent and a twelfth of a typical hard disk drive (HDD) respectively.
• The 1TB version offers 98,000 random read and 90,000 random write IOPS (Input Output Operations Per Second) , as well as sequential read and write speed of 540 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 520 MB/s.
• The 840 EVO mSATA SSD line-up will be available this month globally, and exact launching date can vary depending on the region.

Just heard, I wanted a Samsung consumer based mSATA SSD for so long and just bought a new Intel 525 mSATA but I'm really considering selling the Intel and grabbing the 250GB version of the EVO mSATA.
Don't ask me why I'd choose a less durable Samsung TLC mSATA over a slower but more durable Intel MLC mSATA, guess I just like Samsung and what they've done with 2.5" SSD's thus far, I'm really glad they've finally decided to make consumer based mSATA SSD's.
Here's the first review:

Well, it's about time... I've been wanting something like this for years. Now we can have 3TB+ of pure SSD in our laptops.
-
When do you think we will get these in?
-
Not sure. It looks like they're preparing them for this winter (Q4 2013) or early next year (Q1/Q2 2014). I hope Alienware goes back to Samsung for SSD's. It would be awesome to see the 840 EVO's offered.
-
Same specs as the 2.5" EVO. I`d imagine that this is really awesome news for MSI owners that can Raid0 3 of them

Man, you beat me to it, I was so going the create this thread.
As for the drive it's a beast, just like the regular 840 Evo. I just wish my laptop had an mSATA slot. -
@ Link4
You can always get a regular 2.5" Samsung EVO and add a caddy for extra storage if your laptop has a optical drive bay. -
I'll buy one.
-
We need more thin and light laptops with dual mSATA drives instead of the 2.5". Now just want Samsung Pro SSDs that you can find in retail...
-
If they can fit 1TB in mSATA format does that mean 2TB SSD's are soon to be released and at reasonable cost? Imagine a $600 2TB 2.5" SSD.
And yeah for thin and lights, ditch the 2.5" SSD. If you can get 512GB to 1TB SSD's for reasonable cost in mSATA format, you can easily fit two mSATA's in the place of a single 2.5" drive, if not three, or just offer two and save the space for better cooling/faster components. -
I wonder if Samsung is ever going to incorporate SSD caching to mechanical drives in future versions of Samsung's Magician Utility, Samsung has acquired NVELO (in 2012) the makers of DataPlex a SSD caching software.
I'd love to see Samsung's own Rapid Mode with system ram caching to the SSD and then Samsung's version of DataPlex caching a Rapid Mode enabled SSD onto a mechanical hard drive, that would be a dream setup for my laptop; in which case I'd probably get a 250GB - 500GB Samsung EVO mSATA combined with a 1TB spinner and 16GB of Samsung DDR3 for such use. -
Soooooooooooo. How much? Over or Under a grand?
-
I got a Blu-Ray writer in here so I rather keep it, I tried data migration to a 256GB 840 Pro but every software I tried failed. There was less then 160GB date but for some reason it couldn't copy the disk, maybe the partition was too big and windows for some reason couldn't shrink it below 400GB. I will have to copy files manually probably when I have the time.

I hope this announcement means that Samsung will be supplying these to the retail chain, unlike their previous generation of mSATA SSDs.
The 500GB drive should sell well at the right pricing.
John -
It is mentioned in the announcement that the 840 EVO mSATA is for retail. I just wonder how much difference there is between TLC and MLC.
-
20nm MLC has roughly 3000 program/erase cycles, 20nm TLC has roughly 1000 program/erase cycles. According to Anandtech, TLC isn't currently a reliability/longevity concern unless you're using a server workload. It will probably be okay for use in consumer devices for another process shrink or so before it starts becoming a concern.

i like it, i just want it in ngff
-
Doubtful, in my opinion. It may be nice to see, but I don't think it's worth it for Samsung, considering the path they're paving. Samsung will likely continue its path toward innovations with SSD technology until mechanical drives become obsolete altogether - I can see this happening within the next ten years. The advancement of technology doubles every 18 - 21 months now.
-
That's definitely coming. Personally, I'm happy they released it in mSATA so those of us with existing systems will be able to use it.
-
Samsung sold their HDD business to Seagate. It's difficult to see them getting back into it with hybrid tech. Of course, money talks.
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
They appear to be cooperating. My new Samsung MB 2TB portable HDD contains a 3 platter Seagate 9.5mm HDD made in what was Samsung's HDD factory in China although that may reflect the realization that many more consumers have heard of Samsung than have heard of Seagate.

About time a storage system can cost more than cpu + gpu + mb(assuming all max spec'd) in a computer.
-
That's quite a lot for storage. A "max specced" cpu can cost $1000, max graphics $500 (up to $2000 if it's professional), motherboard say $300. So that's $1800+ for storage. There are a few 2.5" SSDs that cost that much (800GB Intel DC S3700, for example), but not many at this point. Now back in 2006-2007, 256GB SSDs cost upwards of $2000.
-
Can't wait until these hit the market. The regular Samsung 840 EVO's are continuously dropping in price. You can get the 500GB for almost $300 now. I think I like where this is going...
-
Still waiting...22 days till the year ends.
Maybe Samsung is planning on showing them at CES 2014 and sent out early production models out to online reviewers as a source of firmware beta testing and publicity to support their early announcement of the 840 EVO mSATA SSD, perhaps final production models will come with finalized firmware with more features and better performance (wishful thinking). -
Samsung unveils mSATA version of the 840 Evo solid-state drive | Reviews - Peripherals - CNET Reviews
If that's the MSRP that's $10 above 840 EVO 2.5" version, but the "discount" would probably be much less compared to 840 EVO 2.5" (I got it 40% off at 150 for a 250G drive).
My new laptop is coming on 12/23 and I really want to put the msata 840 EVO on. Otherwise(issues like price, heat) I would have to use the my 840 EVO 2.5'' and don't get to use the HDD.
A Chinese site has put on the review and benchmark for 1TB msata 840 EVO the day it came out. Could even be understood without translation.

these are insane. loving them,, too much coin for me though, can't justify the price right now..
-
Same for me. At some point in the future, I'll probably upgrade to something like this, but it's not going to happen very soon!
-
Expected availability and price?
-
They're expected to retail for about the same price as the regular 840 EVO's, give or take $10.

Hmm. sounds reasonable. That gives me time to keep saving so I can buy the pair.
But at the rate I keep running out of storage space I fear even though might not be enough. Technology...lets get the lead out. -

Why? Did you give them the $$$ already? Lol... (it is only Jan 6, 2014, btw...). -
OK. Maybe disappointed is a more appropriate word.
But they did say that, didn't they? -
So, has anyone read or heard anything about when these are hitting the shelves? It seems like they've been reviewed by almost every reviewer out there... You'd think they would be available soon.

AnandTech | Samsung SSD 840 EVO mSATA (120GB, 250GB, 500GB & 1TB) Review
Yeah; perfect for a File History drive in my notebooks! Low (idle) power and huge capacity.
Power consumption during heavy use is uninspiring (way more than the 7200 RPM drives I was used to), sure, more performance - but that doesn't help if the workload is sustained and the notebook is not plugged in to mains.
Worse, this high power usage continues (for a while) even after the data is transferred to/from the drive (this is the pseudo SLC nand transferring data to the TLC nand and/or GC kicking in).
As a 'lightly' used data/history file drive it would work for me - as an O/S, Program and WIP drive? Ugh... (thinking about the power/heat issues).
At ~$600 - I would be buying dozens of these... -
Pre-Order is now available at ADORAMA Samsung 840 EVO mSATA : Buy or Learn at Adorama. Pricing is still a lot higher that 2.5" 840 EVO.
Since my XPS will come with both mSATA and 2.5", I'd rather buy a 750GB or 1TB 2.5" SSD and wait for awhile until the mSATA pricing drop down a bit. -
It's also pre-order available on amazon.co.uk. The price is even a little higher than ADORAMA.
I remembered seeing somewhere that the 1TB 840 EVO is around 570 dollars.
-
I suppose in a sustained usage situation, you'd have to determine whether or not the performance advantages compensate enough for the power disadvantages.
And if you'd be buying dozens of them at $600, start saving now, since they will assuredly get there within a few months. -
Well I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go. My question now is as it was before: Where can you purchase such a device?
