If AS-SSD says your in AHCI, you're in AHCI.

Man just got my 64gb SSD and it runs to exact specs, I love it and don't have to really worry about it dying on me. It's weird because I tried and intel x25 ssd like a year ago and it really didnt' perform this fast.

No, anything current gen is miles ahead of even the venerable gen2 Intel's.

It is not your imagination: it is faster. :)

The 4K writes seem to be to low, just my opinion.
Can you post the results of the AS SSD Copy-Benchmark?

Here you go. Also, not sure if it matters but I was using the "balanced" power profile when I ran this. Should I re-benchmark in Performance?

Alienware m11x R3 which is sata 3 capable. The 470 should be running sata 2.

Toyo, I agree with you. But we're talking about the 470 here right?

It is an obvious step up from Intel G2's.

When I tried the G2's last, I was not thrilled with them (benchmarks don't matter) when I tried the 320 Series, I finally found an SSD (finally) good enough to be overall faster than my mechanical HDD's (XT Hybrid's, Scorpio Black 750...) for my usage patterns.

When I compared the 320 Series to the 510 Series on my desktop workstations, the 510 blew everything out of the water (including my expectations coming from G2's, SF 'junk' and older tech SSD's).

I'm surprised that SandForce as a company is still around frankly. All of it's products are in beta still (3 yrs?) and it does not look any better going forward. Unless one is into beta testing products for a seemingly reduced price (vs. the 'real' SSD's out there).

Yea, I am just ribbin you. Although my 2nd gen 160GB Intel is 99% as stable as my 470. I have each SSD installed on my 2 Toughbooks and I really can't feel or see any difference. I feel comfortable with each drive, that is something I could not say for Corsair F-Series with the SF controller.

Were all good :) We both have good taste in SSD's.

    Cool. ;)

Are not the Toughbooks operating at SATA1 speeds though?

Maybe that is why you can't tell between those SSD's?

My models are, not the latest ones. However, I can't tell a difference in everyday computing. Everything pops open in a blink, boots in 15 seconds, etc. I put my Intel into my sons new Lenovo T420 with the 2nd Gen Sandybridge I5 and I could not see any difference. As long as I don't do benchmarking to remind me :D The only scores that are affected is the read and write in which I am at a constant 145Mbps.

Are there known issues with the 64 GB Samsung 470? Might be getting another laptop and looking at another SSD..

    Hi Nickichino,

I do apologise for the belated response. I have been unwell. As for the drive, I haven't been bothered with trying to update the firmware. I have no issues with it as is. It's working beautifully on my linux machine.

As for the screw holes, they are located on the side, bottom cover wise. I'm sure you would've already gotten an answer to your questions, but I thought I'd reply just in case its still unresolved. Be cool!

Don't worry about losing any of your data. The update is not to fix problems with the drive, it's performance enhancements.

Glad to hear your feeling better!

Has anyone figured out how to apply the firmware upgrade on OEM drive?

Mine comes from Dell and I really want to upgrade the F/W. :(

Samsung does not give F/W support for OEM drives. In your case, Dell should be the one to offer that.

Dell has really bad track record in providing the Samsung SSD F/W.

Why can't Samsung do the same thing like Intel? F/W update would work on both retail and OEM units.

If SSD vendor release F/W, I would assume it either fixes bug or improves performance, maybe even both. As an user, I definitely want to have latest F/W to ensure smooth daily usage. :)

If you are not having any problems I wouldn't worry about firmware updates.

The reason Dell doesn't bring out a firmware update is probably because there are no problems with their machines.

The F/W update on the 470 does not "fix" anything, it is a performance adjustement. I would also assume that the Controllers have tottaly different software written for them, such as what Dell specifys, or Apple.

Hey all. I've had my OEM samsung SSD 470 356gb drive for about 4 months now, and even with the stock firmware, I'm blown away by its performance. I've taken the baby steps approach to moving up and playing with the big boys in the SSD world (I went from standard HDD --> hybrid drive --> now to SSD!

Any linux users here? The only way I know how to "benchmark" my drive on my rig atm is using hdparm, and here is what I get:

    command: hdparm -tT /dev/sda

    output: /dev/sda:
    Timing cached reads: 7452 MB in 2.00 seconds = 3727.14 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 596 MB in 3.00 seconds = 202.50 MB/sec

I've had the machine turned on 24/7 for about 4 months now, with the occasional reboot here and there, and it's running as sweet as the day I put it in. It's doing me proud and I've not concerned myself in chasing a firmware update. I'm happy with it as is. :) Another proud and happy owner of a samsung SSD :D

    EDIT: More benchmarking results

    WRITE

    command: dd if=/dev/zero of=tempfile bs=1M count=1024 conv=fdatasync,notrunc
    output: 1024+0 records in
    1024+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 4.54746 s, 236 MB/s

    *READ

    command: dd if=tempfile of=/dev/null bs=1M count=1024
    output: 1024+0 records in
    1024+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 0.201716 s, 5.3 GB/s

*I'm not too sure about this last output. Seems a bit suspect. 5.3Gb/Sec?
