Looks like another solid entry from Samsung. IMO at similar price points, I'd definitely get either this or the Crucial M4 as my top choice SSD. I hope we get to see how the lower capacity drives perform and how much power they consume.
-
I dont think these will be similar price points though...
-
I have to admit that I was waiting to see what the 830 had to offer, and from what I have read so far, I can't say that it has any decided advantage over the Crucial M4. So, at this point, even if the 830 is offered at the 470 pricepoint, I would probably go for the Crucial, especially since it seems that the bugs have been worked out of the Crucial by now.
-
This new SSD is going to rock. I predict it's going to be priced just a tad more than the 470 is. They won't have to compete with the 470 since the inventory is drying up.
If you buy the Samsung you won't have to work thru any bugs, wait for a bug fix, etc. I believe they have proven they can make a reliable electronic device! -
One advantage the 830 has is the blazing file copy speeds.

Another could be power consumption, but I haven't seen measurements yet. -
I plan on getting this. However I'm just worried when it comes to updating the firmware. I'd rather not have to open up my laptop yet again, remove the ssd, and connect it to another laptop just to update its firmware.
Is there anyway to know for sure how updates will work with this thing? Or could a current owner of the 470 series let me know (either here or by PM) if they were able to update a Samsung SSD while it was still in the notebook and NOT have to remove it? -
-
I'm not running it but thanks! I just plan on doing a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate on the Samsung 830 but before I do that I'd like to put it into the 2nd bay, update the firmware, and then do a complete format of the SSD.
Then once it has the latest firmware I'd move it over into the primary slot and install Windows 7 on it.... -
m4 is still going to be the dollar/performance/reliability champ.
-
Maybe on price but reliability I don't think so. Any word on availability yet? I want to get this ASAP....
-
-
Anyone know if the consumer version of the 830 is going to be a self encrypting drive like the oem PM830. I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.
-
I like the model but I think they need to fix their random read/write performance for these drives, perhaps it's a firmware issue but those numbers are really poor for a SATA III SSD because even it's predecessor has a leg up on it in both accounts. I mean, if you are going to use the space for storage then by all means, that doesn't matter but most of us aren't so I think Samsung kind of screwed up with this model. I recently purchased the Samsung 470 and it has some real impressive feats over my previous Seagate Momentus and I mean by leaps and bounds.
-
I really doubt that You need more then 150 MB/s 4KB random writes in high queue depths, and that's only benchmark in witch Samsung 830 is noticeably slower then competition.
-
Yeah by far it exceeds everything else on the market.....cant wait to own it.
-
-
Anyone seen this yet? I can't find it anywhere yet, it might be delayed. Perhaps someone in USA could call Samsung's SSD dept and ask them the release date of the 830 range? 1-800-726-7864

Samsung 830 Series SSD launched in South Korea
I heard that distributor in Croatia has it, but it isn't for sale yet. -
Thanks Tomy, hopefully it will be released in UK very soon

USA pretty please!

(should be in stock any day now)
Amazon.com: Samsung 830 - Series MZ-7PC256N/AM 256 GB 2.5 Inch SATA III MLC Internal SSD Laptop Kit with Norton Ghost 15: Electronics -
Yup the prices are there:
64 GB: $136.99 w/Norton Ghost Kit
128GB: $226.99 w/Norton Ghost Kit
256GB: $406.99 w/Norton Ghost Kit
512GB: $784.99 w/Norton Ghost Kit
At least on Amazon at the moment, those are the prices being listed, I thought for sure they would try to compete w/Crucial by offering a lower price -
Do you think the "kit" willl the include the spacers to make it fit a 9mm drive? I like that its so slim and sleek but I'm not sure what size my Envy has when it comes to the hard drives....
-
-
Sweet! Look forward to getting this drive. Shouldn't longer one would think...
-
-
Hmm.. it's gonna be a tough choice between the Intel 510 and this for my new M17x R3.
-
Amazon has usually ships within 3-6 weeks....lets hope that time frame is incorrect and is quickly rectified/improved...
-
If any of you find out if this drive is self encrypting will you please post the info. I am hoping they are so I don't have to buy an intel 320 series. Thank you!

I am now a proud owner of a 256 PM830
Since I returned my M18x I do not have a machine that is Sata 3 (6g) right now.
I did do some tests on my M15x and it is amazing.
I will admit the 4k r/w I would to be a bit better but compared to my PM800 256 this thing is smoking.

EDIT ADD
Ghosted above ssd to the new PM830 here are my stats
I am going to be honest no differance between using is as the primary OS drive or a secondary empty drive.
I think I am hiting the max performance for my sata chipest

And now, for my favorite all time question:
Nailgunn,
with the new SSD installed: what can you see different compared to your old SSD in comparable, real world use? -
I got really lucky this was a PM830 kit from Ebay. Retail box. got a good price also.. noone has been looking real hard. I beleive after this post more people will be watching -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Okay!
I just noticed that the 830 has no O/S installed (0/238GB used): do note that with an identical/comparable setup, the 'scores' will change drastically for the 830.
Right now, as a secondary/data drive setup - it is able to stretch itself to the fullest. If you do clone to your current SSD - the comparison between 2nd drive and primary/OS drive scores will be interesting to me.
Enjoy your new SSD and hope you're always that lucky on eBay in the future! -
@ Nailgunn
Where did you buy it from? And where are you located? -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Located: Michigan.
-
It came from the Bay Area California.
I see there are a 2) 128g on Ebay right now. Price is outrageousa, and from Asia.
Retail box
My kit came with Ghost 15, Samsung Disk,
Power adater, sata cable, and a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter/w screws.
I see there was a question about an Spacer.
There was no spacer in my box. I am looking at the SSD and I can't figure out why you would need one anyway.
Samsung took the 2mm from the top of the enclosure
The side mount holes are the same as my other SSD's.
If you are doing bottom mounting it is no issue. -
Okay I saw that on the side...I'm more interested in knowing where he ordered it cuz I need it asap.
EDIT: Saw your post about eBay.
Guess I'll continuing waiting for Amazon... -
Since it wasn't included in the purchase, I think he purchased the desktop-kit, where it comes w/the 3.5" bracket and the spacer is irrelevant for those purchases. You'd have to purchase the laptop kit to get the spacer, at least that makes the most sense. Now, it doesn't necessarily mean that the laptop-kit won't have a 3.5" bracket but I wouldn't be shocked if it doesn't.
-
Awesome Nailgun! I can't wait to get one to go with my 470. In regards to pricing, when I bought my 256GB 470 it was less than a month after it was released. The price was $519.00 just about everywhere. So, they have roughly come down a hundred bucks for 100 Gb's. That's not too bad for that time frame.
-
the connector is the same distance from the bottom of the ssd
side mount holes are the same distance from the bottom of the ssd.
Even if your laptop mount was both bottom and side it works. They are taking the 2mm from the top of the ssd and not changing the mounting dimensions.
I paid $406 with the shippingSupper lucky
This is almost like finding a new blog and saying "FIRST: -
If you don't mind, when you have free time, could you show us how you secured your SSD w/o the spacer. Just for curiosity's sake. -
I am ghosting my old ssd to the new one right now.
My hd is in a caddy. I mount the drive into the caddy using side mounting screws. Then the caddy screws into the laptop case. -
not sure if anybody else has posted this already, but the 64gb 830 seems to be available now at newegg.
-
We should be getting and official announcement from Intel sometime this week if the release date for the 520 is indeed November 4th, 2011.
Hopefully, we also get some news on Intel's Hawley Creek details and release date. I just want Hawley Creek to have the features and speed on Intel's 320 minus the firmware bug (totally fixed) with a slight price drop. Or else, I'd just go for a 310 (price reduction) after Hawley Creek has been released. -
-
@ Nemix77: I think that You posted in wrong thread.

Two models (64GB/128GB "desktop kit") are in stock, the rest are "available 10/31." -
I doubt the .2mm difference is going to limit the older laptop models very much. If you do find that the SSD is loose, you can always wrap it in some very thin foam wrap or something of that nature. You can apply the foam on the backside of the cover, then attach it and it will be tight.
mine might be a little more than that though. My drive has a heater that wraps around it that is pre-formed. Then it goes into a gel filled stainless cage/caddy. Why can't ****be easy -
