Speaking of endurance, here's my 830 (and my other storage devices) so far. Not as impressive but I have to say I was surprised. 1.21 TB and counting...
I use my laptop just about everyday, plugged and unplugged. I use Hibernate but not as much as I use Sleep. I have 8GB RAM and have not touched my Page File. AHCI is ON. Super Fetch, Defrag, and Indexing have been shut off via Magician.

I having a problem with my SSD. Basically i want to run the secure erase outside windows. I made a bootable usb secure erase using the Latest version of Samsung SSD Magician (3.1.1), but every time i boot into the USB, my screen is not displaying properly. Instead i get scrambled screen like the one below
I have tried different USB and have also reinstalled Samsung ssd magician many times and created new usb. but still the problem exist. I am running latest firmware; CXM03B1Q. Is there anyway to fix this? -

Can you just try a normal bootable CD/DVD?
-
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Well, I've run out of ideas...
Your BIOS doesn't have a 'language' option, somewhere, does it? -
---
I did secure-erase three times today on my 830, because I wanted to install WinXP x64 (and the OS does sucks, made my speakers deaf, lol )
finally on the fourth trial, I manage to insert the AHCI driver inside the WinXP x64, without giving me the BSOD (ya know, when we change the sata mode in bios from compatibility to AHCI without the AHCI driver using WinXP x86 or x64, the OS will show you BSOD, lol )
the 830 is now with WinXP x64, but no audio on my T61 (oh well, at least I still can use my bluetooth headphone, lol )
why I "downgrade" my 830, because I got samsung 470 for my second drive ... the 470 is an oem version and cannot be recognized with Samsung Magician, so I've installed Win7 x64 (to make the TRIM work with win7 ) while the 830 still have the "weekly" trim from Samsung Magician because it stuck with winXP x64 -
Newegg has these on sale. I bought a 128BG for 89.99, 256Gb is 199.99, free shipping.

I was running the performance optimization in SSD Magician, I have 201GB free on an 256GB SSD, but while the optimization was running a Windows 7 low disk space warning popped up, stating i was running out of disk space on drive c: , so i wonder what performance optimization is actually doing?
John. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Tind, I would guess it is simply creating a single file of all available space the O/S is reporting as 'free' and when it is finished - it deletes it. (Remember the 'Tony Trim' aka 'poor mans' trim way back when...).
This does make some SSD's recover some performance. -
How frequently should the Performance Optimization be run via the Magician software on the 830?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
I wouldn't be doing it more than 12 times a calendar year (at most...).
-
Why 12? Performance optimization just forces the GC that already happens in the background to run. Just run it when you feel the SSD is slower than it should be.
-
I just checked for a Firmware update through the Magician Software and it is saying my SSD is up to date. The last time I upgraded the firmware was last March. Is it true that no FW updates have been issued since?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
If Tinderbox' optimization run is any indication, running the Magician (aka Tony Trim) type of optimization is physically writing to all the free space on the drive - very different than a proper TRIM or even a normal GC run.
See:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...ge/613245-samsung-830-ssd-56.html#post8883385
That is why I recommend less than once a month (12x per year). -
"Tony Trim" is only necessary when the software doesn't know which blocks are have data on them and which blocks don't. The SSD controller knows which blocks are empty so it doesn't superfluously read/write from the empty blocks when GCing.
A checking the amount of writes from SMART data (via CrystalDiskInfo) before and after a "perfomance opitmization" shows that it does not write to all the free space, as expected. (unfortunately, CDI doesn't show data written beyond 2 decimal spaces, so I can't see the exact amount of data written by the perf. optimizatoin, if at all)
My guess is that when the SSD controller is coalescing partially filled blocks, it locks the blocks so that it doesn't get overwritten when the controller is trying to copy the data to a new block. -
proud owner of two 256GB drives as of today
........... now is the time people, 160 with free shipping at amazon
-
Proud owner of 128GB SSD. at this moment 4K reads are 13-15MB/sec. SATA2. No JJB or Stamatix tweak made yet. Is it normal such low speed for SATA2?
Also is it normal that its name in device manager is ATA Samsung???
And hd tune shows UDMA5 active? -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
James, you must be running in IDE mode (not AHCI)?
Seems to me that is why UDMA5 is showing... -
Even so, 4K randoms are lower on series 4 and 5 chipset thanks to some power management features, i was getting 15MB/s 4K random reads on my G73JH in AHCI mode, Crucial M4.
-
I remember my crucial shew at least 18MB before JJB tweaks...
Sequential speeds are over 200 so I doubt that UDMA5 mode is correct... And I know that AHCI is set by default in BIOS and I can't even change it. But don't get what is wrong here.
BTW I use latest IRST drivers (only drivers without software itself). Perhaps will need to install software to insure that AHCI is enabled or will downgrade IRST driver.
@Tijo yeah, most likely it is chipset power settings problems + SATAII but I didn't expect SO SLOW SSD. And power settings I may change will give boost only when OS already booted... unless I play with C3/C6 states in BIOS. -
Even if it's "slow" compared to other benchmarks, it's still pretty darn fast in terms of feel and that is what matters most.
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
James, you can also try ThrottleStop 5 to see your SSD start to feel like a real SSD (again; the c states options).

I do like the new lifetime and status bar -
I just bought an hp dv7tqe and a samsung 830 ssd. The laptop doesn't recognize the ssd as a hard drive when i connect via the supplies usb cable. When i go to "printers and devices" the laptop sees the ssd as "usb production" and in the properties as as "storage device" -- it doesn't show up in the computer folder as a drive.
Any suggestions on what's wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks. -
cmd
then
diskpart
then
automount enable
ps: 'Enter' after each command, of course. -
tilleroftheearth and tijo, when I disabled C3/C6 states as expected I got faster speeds. 4K reads increased to 21MB/sec max. Still expected more but...
Using JJB's tweak it was the same (maybe somewhat lower). Don't want to increase CPU work more than 95%.
I found that using Samsung SSD Magician Software optimization setting of Power Settings Optimization speed increased from 13 to 16MB/sec.
Does anyone know what that settings really changed? I'm just curious. think that the same processor idle settings but how much exactly...
Also, on a side note. I found that new Magician Software doesn't have that optimization anymore!

I have a spare 5V 2.5A adapter that I can connect to my external enclosure and that fixed everything.
Bear in mind that the drive is rated at 1.6A and a single USB can provide 0.5A by specification, so you kind of need three of those connected together to get about enough power for the SSD to operate externally. Most USB HDD enclosures come with double USB cable only. -

What is the difference between Bulk and the Kit? What exactly does the kit do, or is it just manuals and drivers? If so can I download the drivers online?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Bulk and Kit: bare drive vs. cloning kit (software + hardware). No 'drivers' needed for SSD's.
-
Not really OEM/Bulk since the drive is still in retail packaging. I think the B probably stands for Basic.
B/WW (Basic): SSD only
D/AM (Desktop): SSD, SATA cable, Molex to SATA power cable, 3.5" to 2.5" drive bay adapter, Norton Ghost
N/AM (Notebook): SSD, SATA to USB adapter, drive spacer, Norton Ghost -
Just bought this on sale at Amazon. Got the 512 gig version for $430 + tax.

I just bought a samsung 830 128 gb and tried to install it in my HP DM4 using a caddy to move the mechanical drive to the optical bay, but..
With just the SSD the computer boots very fast. But when I put the mechanical drive in the caddy it takes 10 min to boot. Tthe mechanical drive does show in “my computer” but not with capacity and the computer freezes when I try to open the drive.
I tried to limit the speed to 1.5 gb with a jumper without success.
I also tired to put the SSD in the caddy and it shows up in “my computer” with capacity and sometimes I can see the files but other times the computer just freezes.
Any ideas / suggestions ? -
A defective caddy perhaps?
-
davidricardo86 Notebook Deity
Did you make sure to check if you were running in AHCI mode from within the UEFI BIOS?
Are there any Windows OS files on the HDD in the caddy?
Have you checked your devices' boot order in the UEFI BIOS?
Yes could be a defective caddy.

I was running in AHCI mode but now the mechanical drive does not respond in the normal HDD bay either so the problems was probably due to it starting to fail. Now I think I will return the 128 gb 830 and get the 256 gb 830 instead..

So here's some performance information of my Samsung 830 256GB running cloned XP Pro 32bit from HDD on which I made clean install.
- running AHCI mode, cloned with Acronis True Image Home 2011 but misaligned as Acronis does the standard 63 sector offset so 31Kb (63x512b), drive pretty new (~40GB ever written):
http://i50.tinypic.com/bgwa9z.jpg
- same as above but aligned with Partition Assistant Pro 5.1 to the 2048 sector offset so 1024Kb, drive pretty new (~ 110GB ever written):
http://i48.tinypic.com/10oilno.jpg
Laptop is the T61 with Intel GPU in my sig, running Middletons BIOS to enable SATA 2. -
How much space you are leaving in 256 GB ?
-
drives are pretty new, the tested one has only about 20GB in it. No over provisioning. The Magician Performance optimization is scheduled for once per week, but it's likely that I change it with longer period of time. Since I'm running XP, this is my manual TRIM command right there, lol.
strangely, I cant do sleep or hibernate, as the laptops (both) would come on again just after that (within a second) ... :| I guess it has to be something with the power settings somewhere. Now I dont usually use those modes (I turn on and off) but I'd like to have those available. Any ideas ? -
Click on battery icon on start up>>More power options>> Change Plan settings (What ever is selected)>>Change advanced Plan Settings>> Then a window will open you will "Sleep" tab then sub tab "Allow hybrid sleep" set it Zero "0" then other sub tab "Hibernate after" set it Zero "0". So it will Off your hibernate.

Samsung 830 256GB SSD recently hit 6 Pib writes under endurance testing
impressive
that is over 6.2 million gigabytes written, and it maintains average speed of ~300MB/s through the whole test (under SATA3 interface of course). And is still going ...
Recent calculations show that with about 10GB/day writes this drive will last for some 2,000 years ... OMG LOL.
SSD Write Endurance 25nm Vs 34nm - Page 215
I guess impressive is not enough to be said for this drive, it's EPIC -
Install 830 256GB 9 sec and caddy is also working fine.
-
If not, what's my next best bet?
I think clone is my best option. It's a work machine, with a lot of work software and network settings etc already configured. I won't be back at work until mid January, so doing the fresh Windows install followed by driver and software updates etc isn't possible. I'm aware of alignment issues, and want this to be optimised for performance. There's a lot of old, confusing, and convoluted info on the net and I'm just looking for the easiest migrate procedure possible. I'd appreciate your input.
P.S. I tried the highly recommended Acronis True Image 2013 but the demo version also won't clone. This sucks. Still looking for an SSD align and clone tool. That's all the features I need.
