Good Catch! B&H is a good place. Bought several digital cameras from them in the past... thought they were in Seattle though?

    No, East Coast (NY).

OT - A while back when platter based HDD pricing started to go through the roof, one could have still picked up a WD Scorpio Black for the old pricing. This lasted a few weeks until they ran out of stock.

Everyone seems to recommend the M4 and the Samsung 830, but what about the Ocz Octane with the new Indilinx controller? Do you recommend that?

This is what i'd consider a wait and watch situation, so far i don't recall having seen problems with the octane like there was when the SF-2281 drives were launched.

I wouldn't consider it. It is slower than the 830 and the M4. It is also slower and more expensive than the Vertex 3.

I was speaking from a reliability perspective only as i'm curious to see if OCZ can produce something solid after the whole Sandforce debacle and slower in benchmarks doesn't necessarily means slower in standard desktop usage.

EDIT: Just did a quick check and in Canada at least, the vertex and octane are very similarly priced with the octane being slightly cheaper. Around the same price as the M4, cheaper than the 830.

I got the 830 before ending up with the M4. Both 256 capacity. I had to send the 830 back to Amazon because it refused to partition properly. M4 worked great outta the box. Was around $30-$40 cheaper too!

The OCZ Octane will be a solid SSD. I've heard very good things about the indilinx controller. It will only get faster as time goes on with firmware and subsequent controller updates

I will say the 830 is also a wait and see. Its only been out a few months old. So far so good though

BUT if you want want something that is proven and trouble free, the Crucial M4 is a great choice, or if you are willing to pay more, the Intel 510 is another solid choice

What was it not doing? Was it not partitioning at all?

Well, it appeared to do fine through the partition process, but it never made it through an OSX Lion install or a Snow Leopard install. Always errored out near the end. I tried so many different things. Remote installing, changing images, putting the Optical drive back in and trying out Snow Leopard, etc etc...

Gotcha. It could be a problem with OSX because I haven't heard anyone else have this issue. I've also partitioned two myself with one of them having 3 partitions.
