So it's my turn to leave the hard drive. I can afford the 840pro, but doesn't change the fact that the difference is still 100€, so I want to know if it's worth it at all.

I'm mostly concerned of reliability, does it have any problems or anything? I heard that the 840 SSDs break very fast, but I haven't heard much beyond that one/two early cases, so maybe it was just some unlucky individuals early on?

Is there any other differences I should know of?

840 drives were released very recently so it is hard to talk about the long term reliability for now. Regardless, I haven't seen anyone complaining about the failures for the retail drives. The failed ones were the test drives and they had an old firmware.

Ah, I didn't know the failed ones were any different from retail, or that firmware could make so much difference.

Anyway yeah, I mostly meant any problems that might have occurred so far, but if not then sounds good.

it's too early to talk about the 840 Pro. However knowing the record of the 830 (which is epic :D ) the 840 Pro has pretty good chance to fulfill expectations

    - main difference between those:
840 Pro - faster in the small writes (~3 times, important!), consumes less power, uses 21nm nand cells (vs 27nm for the 830) thus will have somewhat shorter life (*), more expensive.

    * - by shorter life I mean the 256GB 830 recently hit 6 PiB in writes (over 6 million gigabytes written) so with average of 10GB/day writes this drive would last somewhat 2,000 years ... lol. Link in the 830 thread on here. So if you plan on using it for over 1,000 years then you may want to get the 830 (EPIC LOL)

    - note the 256GB version of the 830 is a bit faster than the 512GB version (830).
    - also the pre-production firmware of the 840 Pro had some bug that eventually got worked out so no retail drive has had issues, or at least nobody that bought it has reported so.

    that's about it

The 830's are great and affordable. Hands down, I'd rather have two 830's for $50 more than a single 840 pro.

Ah, I didn't realize 840 uses much less power, that's something to consider I suppose. I don't move a lot of information daily, but I do move larger files and/or piles of smaller files sometimes.
Well who wouldn't, but 830 isn't that much cheaper. :p It's just 20% or something.

I bought two 256gb for $159.99 each, they'll be on sale again. Keep an eye on eBay as well. If you need the latest stuff, get the 840's. Both are excellent drives, you will be happy either way.

I went ahead and got the 840 Pro 256gb from newegg... wasnt the cheapest of course, but the power saving of the 840 pros are what sealed the deal... not to mention they are faster. Plan to move this drive into my next system so went ahead with the newer version. So far no reliability issues but as others have said its early on.

Love my 830. 1st SSD and only had for one week. Yea 840 if the price is right I would go for but the 830 is very good.

As ramgen mentioned, the 840s were released very recently - so discussion on their longevity is a bit moot right now. But on a general note, the Samsungs are doing very well, and are favored alongside the other top contenders, both in terms of performance and stability.

I'm not sure the 840 is so much better to warrant the cost just yet, but you are welcome to check this benchmark out for your own knowledge's sake!

You linked the comparison between the 830 and the 840. He's talking 830 vs. 840 Pro. The 840 is a budget drive while the 840 Pro is a high-end drive.
