I see that both the 470 and 830 Series SSD's are now EOL with regards to Firmware (the ones available are now the final releases).

Also, is the DAS function anything to do with encrypting the data on the SSD? I hope not - hardware DATA encryption is just a headache waiting to happen.

    Thanks for the heads up!

I just finished upgrading too thru Magician - no issues.

Do you have your power adaptor plugged in?

Was your battery fully charged? (I updated on battery power - ~95%).

I guess temptation is hard to resist (reference to 840 Pro over Intel 520)

Oh, I've had the 256GB 840 Pro for a few months now. Feels too slow for me in actual workloads though - even with this latest update. Not buying another for any of my systems.

More curiosity than temptation - and the last one I had was sold in about 12 minutes of 'ownership'. lol... (that one was SLOOOOW - not an 840 Pro... this was about two years ago now).

It's actually kind of funny - with the 840 Pro the boot up, some program startups and reboots are obviously faster (by a few seconds...). What is slower is almost everything else... Windows updates, program installs, unzipping/compressing files and anything related to image editing/manipulating. In other words; any real world workloads... Even surfing is slower with the Sammy installed...

As a matter of fact after I updated the firmware, I completed the Windows updates for May (22 on my systems) and the SNB quad core 16GB platform took longer (as usual) than the identical setup except with an Intel 520 240GB SSD installed.

That is why I don't recommend them. Real world work loads are still okay/fast, but I've seen faster. Yet they're priced like they're the best or something. ;)

And I'm sure I'll try a new model again in the future (I'll keep hoping that they'll live up to the hype one day).

Btw, did you get your SSD updated with the power adaptor connected?

You have 22 notebooks? If so wow, if not this is a notebook forum.

While many would disagree on the blazing slowness assessment of the 840 PRO you must be aware at least last I checked the power draw was insanely low vs anything else (consumer) on the market. If you don't use notebooks I can understand why you respond in the way that you do. If you do have a notebook and don't care about the very low power draw vs others that is a fair opinion. But when acting mystified on the pricing and how or why they might cost as they do. Well that would just be a lack of insight on your part. Beyond opinion. High end performance and low power draw look at Haswell look at ARM even reduced performance for greater power savings is the trend. I am not saying I would go major performance reduction but I can recognize it for what it is. I can see it for what it is. And I can understand price is a factor of more than raw performance in many circumstance. On mobile platform 840 PRO can legitimately be argued as the best overall. On a desktop of course I wouldn't even go there.

    I still couldn't.
I updated to irst 12.6 yesterday, maybe it's causing some conflict.
I tried reinstalling magician still the same. Oddly enough, I've done a firmware update a week ago and all was fine.
I might revert irst to update.
See any performance difference from last fw?

My belief would be 22 updates on his systems, not 22 notebooks.

I just updated mine, shaved about 2 seconds off the windows 8 boot time. Haven't used it too much but everything else feels the same

so i uninstalled irst 12.6 (essentially rolled back to 10) and ran ccleaner and was finally able to update the firmware.
however, i think it was more because of irst that i wasnt able to update in the first place.
startup is faster, i dont know if its due to the firmware or the older irst

Samsung 840 pro 256gb on the W110er. It was very noticeable since Windows 8 is crap. On the old firmware, it boots really fast when you don't have an account password, then the boot times increase by about 4 seconds if you put a password on for any reason (and it persists even if you delete the password). This firmware update then recovers about 2 seconds of speed.
I would love for anyone with a solution to stop Windows 8 from trying to authenticate accounts that have no password since this is 2 seconds of useless activity.
