The 1TB Samsung 840 EVO is $367 on Amazon. Can't beat that.

The 840 Evo is cheap for a reason :p

Personally I'd only use it as a storage drive as this point, and that's exactly how I have it setup in my desktop.

Yes, and I'm loving it. I can't wait until 1TB SSD's are less than $300.

Nice price. UK prices for this part are rising (currently at £1 ~ $1) and I'm wondering if stock is disappearing.

My 1TB EVO mSATA has caused me no problems so far and i hope this happy state will continue. There's no alternative for putting 1TB into an mSATA slot. However, I haven't been giving it a hard life. Only 6.13 TBW so far and it has a 100GB set aside as over-provisioning. If I were running annother brand of SSD with half the capacity then the pressure for space would mean that any over-provisioning would be minimal and the rest of the SSD would be worked harder.

People are over-exaggerating the effective lifespan of the NAND in the 840 EVO.

It will last at least 3 years, probably more than 5 years without losing its "greatness." Who in the hell even keeps a computer for more than 5 years these days? Not many. I'm pretty sure that's what N=1 was referring to. People believe the Samsung 840 EVO's will just die all of a sudden, or run slower than a traditional HDD after 2-3 years. That's not true at all. The only way it would degrade so quickly is if you were doing something extremely demanding, such as rendering large videos several hours a day. And if you are someone who plans to do that, you shouldn't be picking one of the cheapest SSD's on the market, anyway. For gamers and everyday PC users, the 840 EVO is the jackpot.

Earlier in the year people were circulating numbers such as 70TB TBW as an indicator of the lifespan but, IIRC, whereever that came from was based around a 256GB SSD. With four times as much NAND I reckon I should be good for 280TB TBW. with my current usage pattern then that's >30 years.

Uhhh no this is what I was referring to. Along with this:

I will also add that for my 500GB 840 Evo used as a data drive in my Clevo, running the performance restoration tool restored maybe 80% of the performance, so it's not a perfect fix. And before the performance fix, IT DID RUN SLOWER THAN AN HDD I kid you not:

Don't forget the SSD can be moved into the next laptop, down the road. I bought my M4 when my HDD died a few years ago, and that became my OS drive when I bought a new laptop.

The SanDisk Extreme PRO 480gb, im speechless about the 10 year warranty.

    -
I recently bought that SSD and i plan on switching from the HDD that i have.
I'm on a laptop, and I dont wish to install win 8 again,i want to refresh the install.

i will be following this guide:

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/features/389149/how-to-restore-a-windows-8-laptop-or-pc-to-factory-settings

also what is the difference between "Just remove my files" or "Clean the drive fully".

" just remove my files" will erase everything, games, programs etc?

what would "clean the drive fully" do then?

Here's the same benchmark for my 1TB EVO mSATA about 6 weeks after I ran the performance restoration tool (not that I had a serious performance issue before I ran it).

    HDTach 1TB EVO mSATA 27Nov14.jpg

In the longer term this is subject to the trend towards smaller storage devices and mSATA being superseded by M.2. However, my current mSATA SSD started its career in a Samsung NP900X4C and is now in a Dell E7440. One attraction of the latter was that it had an mSATA slot ready and waiting.

I would expect the "clean fully" option to include formatting.

If I understand you correctly you are wanting to get everything off the current drive onto the new SSD without having to reinstall Windows. If this is correct the "cloning" is the word normally used. Some SSD manufacturers offer a free download of cloning software but Sandisk only offer this. There are various free and paid for cloning software packages.

Formatting as in it will erase everything, and then reinstall win8? that's what I want.

I want to clean everything on the current HDD, then install programs I like, and then proceed to clone the HDD onto the SSD.

in other words i want all the benefits of reinstalling win8 onto the SSD,with none of the hassle.

why wouldn't a refresh (which includes a format) be enough??

@John: Ferris23 mentioned the mSATA 840 Evo doesn't seem to suffer from this, and only the 2.5" versions do. I can't say anything about the mSATA because I don't have one, but I too like Ferris23 have witnessed the "loading of files in slow motion" on my 500GB 2.5" 840 Evo.

Ineed bro, I am not biased in any way, as I have owned all of the Samsung SSDs, including two 2.5 840 EVO 1TBs. They did suffer so bad that when I accessed my Software folder which contains all the EXE setup files, the icons would load in slow motion man! I don't know how, but the mSATA 840 EVO never had this issue or any slow down. It gives me consistent performance always and the benchmark scores never got lower. Very very strange as they're both based on TLC NAND

That's a valid point whiuch I have overlooked.

I would have expected the 2.5" and mSATA EVOs to have the same controller and firmware (subject to any tweak to allow for different thermal dissipation characteristics). However, Samsung are capable of making baffling decisions (stopping the sale of their notebooks in many parts of the world being an example).

Well that decision was plain stupid... They should have reduced their models and put a bit more into marketting.. Then again, this is something you'd expect from a company which can even put touch buttons properly in its TV.. Mine get's stuck or the humidity causes the volume to increase or decrease to zero and stay stuck.. And this is not just an issue with my TV.. Its with quite a few of them if you search the web..

Sorry for the spam, but this must be said:

I'm glad I sprung for the SanDisk this time round. Just popped in the Extreme Pro 960GB and MY WORD is this thing snappy. I was actually half expecting a tad less snap than my 840 Pro since the SanDisk Extreme II felt just ever so slightly lethargic, but this Extreme Pro is positively more snappy than even the 840 Evo 1TB. Booting is now 2 seconds faster, and the system just feels responsive in general. Coupled with unrivaled consistency this thing is going to be a real keeper.

lol the Samsung was fine for my purposes, What attracted me to Samsung in the first place was the snappiness. I felt let down by the Extreme II because there was some minor but perceptible loss in how snappy the system felt. So I was very pleased that the Extreme Pro actually slightly exceeded the 840 Evo 1TB in snappiness.

Used Macrium Reflect to clone the existing installation btw.

No issues with the Extreme II here.. Run's smooth as a fiddle... I think W 8.1 helps a bit too with all the optimisation for SSD's... Windows 7 isn't that SSD friendly...
