Just installed the Samsung 840 EVO 120 GB into my new Lenovo Y510p. I installed the Samsung Magician software, applied optimizations, and then did some benchmarking. The 10:32 AM (latest) benchmark was done with RAPID mode on. I'm just wondering if the speeds with RAPID disabled are normal? I was expecting them to be a bit higher. Also, does having RAPID enabled at all times negatively affect the SSD?

Nope the SSD is not running optimal.
Specs of Samsung 840 EVO 120GB is as following:
Read: 540MB/s (you got 281MB)
Write: 410MB/s (you got 254MB)
Read IOPS: 94 000 (you got 51 000)
Write IOPS: 35 000 (you got 40 000)
Looks to me like you are running in SATA2 which have a limit on 300MB/s. You need an available SATA3 port to get above 300MB/s speeds. -
How can I check if I am running SATA2 or SATA3? I replaced the CD/DVD drive with a caddy ( Amazon.com: NEW SATA 2nd HDD caddy for 9.5mm Universal CD/DVD-ROM ACER BENQ HP DELL ASUS: Computers & Accessories)

Usually there are only 2 SATA III ports for notebook computers. Unless there is only space for 1 internal drive and the other SATA III port was given to the OD.
Most likely you're going to have SATA II capability available for that caddy. -

Run the app below and look at "transfer mode" for 300 is SATA2 / 600 is SATA3

Also use the app below to benchmark.

So you think it's an issue with the caddy? Can I just swap the locations of the HDD and SSD?
-
That would be ideal. HDD is much slower so give it the slower port. You can look up the processor and chipset to find out the support it has built in. Check the Mfr. laptop spec. The OD might even be SATA I.

Here you go. I disabled RAPID mode.

Yeah, it looks like the Caddy is only SATA2, can you swap your hdd and ssd around?

I will try that tonight and re run the tests. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Swapped drives and I'm getting advertised speeds now:
Sequential Read: 550 MB/s
Sequential Write: 540 MB/ssaturnotaku, Tinderbox (UK), Cloudfire and 3 others like this.
Samsung 840 EVO: Are these speeds normal
