Samsung 850 EVO mSATA and 850 EVO M.2 Spotted <-----

Yeah more Samsung TLC junk.. Really can't they use MLC??

The pro is MLC unless I mistaken. 40nm MLC at that. TLC shouldn't be too bad for 40nm since it won't wear down as quick and need the higher voltages for ecc and bad blocks. But I was just throwing it out there for peeps interested. Notebookreview is a little more tech savvy than the average consumer so i thoguht some people might care. I am probably gonna get a 256gb 850 pro asap, or price is right when I can. So far it would be the only msata that ticks all needs and wants.

Samsung use the best NAND you can find on the market, V-NAND. Although it is TLC it beats the MLC in your beloved Sandisk Extreme by miles, 2x as much life expectancy (150TB vs 80TB). No other SSD manufacturer can offer the same stacked NAND.
The controller Samsung use for the 850 series (PRO and EVO) makes it one of the fastest drives out there (unless you go with the lower capacity models but that is mostly true for all brands).vayu64 likes this. -
It has a 5 year/150TBW warranty. The people these SSD's are targeted to won't even come near that, lol.
Great speed and performance at an affordable price. Can't beat that. And I'm glad they released an M.2 version. Now you can have 3x SSD's (RAID) in the Alienware 15. -

13" is the perfect form factor for me (right now), but the CPU/GPU combination is horrible. The AW 15 is the next best option.
EDIT: My favorite thing about the 850 series is battery life. They average 50 minutes longer over traditional HDD's. It's great. -

I'm still waiting for a 850 pro mSata. When is this thing coming out ?
-
850 evo m.2 has been up for a few days on amazon. I didn't pull the trigger on it. Don't know if a 850 pro msata will come. The market is moving towards m.2.

Waiting to see if there will be a 850 pro M.2 version?

Anandtech has reviews of the mSATA and m.2 format 850 EVO up.
Takeaways:
- Avoid the 1TB mSATA EVO like the plague. Maybe it can be fixed via firmware update, but there is something seriously wrong with that drive. Check the performance consistency page in particular to see what I am talking about. Considering it is the same NAND, controller, and interface as the 2.5" version, I really don't know what they managed to screw up here.
- Doesn't scale very well below 500GB. 250GB performance is not that great, and 120GB is pretty bad. Definitely want to go with at least a 500GB model if possible. And considering the issues with the 1TB mSATA (and no 1TB M.2 version) it looks like 500GB is the only option.
- 500GB M.2 looks like a solid performer, and barring any issues that crop up in the future, looks like one of the strongest options in that form factor. It is especially responsive to overprovisioning. Compared to the Sandisk Extreme Pro 480GB, its performance consistency results started out lagging, but once 25% OP was added, it actually jumped ahead. The 500GB M.2 EVO was a leader or at least competitive in basically every performance benchmark, with its only real issue being slightly higher power consumption, but that is the a fact of life with TLC NAND.Logispice likes this. -

So far very happy with the 500GB M.2. Will report back with any issues, but so far so good.

Got a sm951 256gb and 850 evo 256gb. The sm951 is now boot drive and the evo will be a virtual Linux when I get around to it. Tbh, haven't noticed any significant improvement on boot. Apps do seem to load faster. I provisioned both drives where 200gb is useable. Everyday programs go on to boot drive. Stuff like steam and office will goto E: an 850 pro 512gb. My F: is also a 850 pro 512gb and it is a semi archival backup drive. Crucial data gets burned onto bd-roms or other optical discs. My last 256gb Samsung 830 will also be external archival for crucial stuff for faster access. I haven't benched the sm951 but it actually seems about 5-10 seconds slower on boot when my 850 pro was boot. Shutdown though has dramatically improved. On 850 pro shutdown would usually be 20-30 seconds. Now it is about 5-10. Money well spent? Not really. Latency does seem to be better. One other important thing to note is my sm951 max temp has been 54*c, but usually is high 40's to low 50's 'idle'. When my 850 pro was OS drive temps were usually low 40's maybe escalating to mid 40's on transfer. My second 850 pro is usually high 30's, same as evo. When they get used to transfer files, temps usually peak from low to mid 40's.
I am just throwing this out there for info to extrapolate from. I wish I had gotten a 512gb sm951, but a little too expensive and not really necessary with the other 3 drives. BTW, received from ramcity through amazon.
Oh and one other thing to add. I didn't delete boot partition from boot 850 pro so I had two 8.1 options to choose from on boot. Also, seemed slow initially. Gathered all necessary data to archive drive and reinstalled and deleted boot partition from initial 850 pro. Everything went smooth but when I went to add extensions from chrome I may have possibly picked up a virus/malware from uninstalling extensions. Things didn't seem right so I did a 3rd reinstall. Everything is good now. To reiterate, haven't really noticed any speed improvements except for shutdown on 951.
Also, while I am posting, what are the the 5 black strips that come with the batman. Seems peeps mentioned they were thermal pads for m.2 drives. Is this correct? I really haven't had any temps to worry about but lowering it would be nice. Can I put those on both my m.2 drives? I also considering fujipoly pads for GPU vram and the m.2 drives. I hope somebody can confirm and advise.Last edited: May 8, 2015 -
I think the strips are just spacers for installing the drive in a bay that can accommodate thicker drives.

I just installed my Samsung 850 EVO M.2 500gb the other day and It's really made a difference in my AW 15. Here's a CrystalDiskMark run: I'm not sure if it makes a difference on the drop down choices in that program?
Samsung 850 EVO M.2 and mSATA ... only rumor as of now
