Don't install magician unless you're upgrading the firmware (if/when needed).

With 16GB RAM or more, Windows 8.1 x64 Update 1 and provided the specific software you're running doesn't require a pagefile:

    Disable the pagefile.

    Disable the hibernation file.

    Disable sleep.

    Disable System Restore.

    Disable Error Reporting.

    Disable any/all animations.

And of course; OP your SSD (I recommend 30% or more).

The 'tweaks' that magician does has crippled more systems than helped them, ime.

You may want to experiment with RAPID with 16GB RAM or more - if it's worth it to you to keep running it (workflow dependent) keep in mind that you may no longer be able to disable the pagefile safely.

Depending on your specific software and workflow, even 12GB RAM may be worth to experiment with disabling the pagefile and/or seeing if RAPID gives you a worthwhile increase in snappiness.

    Glad to help.

I've been working with my new Lenovo T440s with the 512GB 850 PRO SSD and it's very, very fast compared to my Lenovo W520 1TB 840 EVO. Running SharePoint & Visual Studio 2013 on VMWare Workstation.

Compiling .NET applications and deploying them to SharePoint just takes just few seconds. I'm very happy with my current setup and may not use my W520 anymore.

Then what is the meaning of having a SSD drive? With that much precaution, its not even worth the trouble.

Sure, if one wants to use his SSD for like 10+ years, then maybe he/she should follow your steps. Otherwise, one should be fine with default settings.

It's not about precaution for the most part, but about optimizing the performance.

"Default" settings are designed for the spinning drives, even at this day and age.

Do you absolutely need those steps, no

Are they gonna improve performance, maybe.

Yeah, but I use hibernation and sleep all the time, so I need those features. I dont like to shutdown my systems, they are on 24/7. And my ssd's have never failed or slowed down significantly, only the 840 pro, both the 256 and 512 GB model, have lost a lot of performance. They are still working with no issues, but ther're not what they used to be in the beginning, the 830 is a lot better when it comes to performance consistency.

    Regards

    Notes:

The steps I outlined in post #51 is general Windows optimizations, not just if you have an ssd installed. Without performing these steps, the install feels 'wrong' to me.

If your systems are on 24/7, then sleep and hibernation are especially useless; even more so with an ssd which makes waiting for a boot-up mere seconds difference - even when they are used.

As I've stated before about Samsung drives; they feel slow to me right after Windows gets fully configured from a clean install - you're just noticing after you've used them awhile. And while I also state the 1TB EVO with 30% OP'ing is the snappiest SSD I've ever used so far, it too has it good and bad days (with or without RAPID enabled).

On my new 850 PRO, do I need to enable RAPID?
