Not sure if this is a place to ask for tech support (please direct me to a better place to post if not allowed here), but... I had a Samsung 860 EVO 4TB SSD installed in my HP EliteBook 820 G4 on the SATA port. It was running Windows 10 flawlessly for 3 months until I updated the BIOS last night and the BIOS no longer recognizes the SSD. I tried rolling back the BIOS to the previous version but it still won't recognize the drive. I took the drive out and put it into an another older HP EliteBook and that computer doesn't recognize it either. Any ideas why my SSD isn't being recognized anymore?
A spare 500gb HDD that I had lying around is still recognized by both laptops when installed into the same SATA slot.
After running the hardware diagnostics via the BIOS, this is what it says when the drive *is* installed on the SATA slot: https://i.imgur.com/nxgbjza.jpg
This is what the hard drive diagnostics says when the drive is NOT installed (nothing on the SATA slot): https://i.imgur.com/2MYBmbH.jpg
Obviously the drive IS being detected because the diagnostic is giving two different results when it is connected versus not connected. I'm at a loss as to what the BIOS update did that is preventing this drive from being recognized...

Off the top of my head:
Double check the SATA/Power cable on the back of the drive to make sure it is connected. If you can trace it, also check the other end correctly plugs into your motherboard.
Did the BIOS perhaps turn OFF the SATA port the Evo is connected to?
Or perhaps change the AHCI / RAID option?

Edit : It looks like you checked the connections because you disconnected and tried another drive. Also, SATA must be enabled as the other drive worked.
Perhaps contacting Samsung tech support?? -
It's a laptop, so there's no SATA/power cable... and it's connected fine. The BIOS didn't turn off SATA. I don't see any changes to boot options; in fact, I even restored defaults and it still isn't working.

Another handy tool would be a SATA to USB converter to test the drive in a USB port. Something like this - https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-2-5-...d=1525727745&sr=8-12&keywords=2.5+hdd+adapter or https://www.amazon.com/Vantec-SATA-...id=1525727745&sr=8-6&keywords=2.5+hdd+adapter to just see if you get an active drive over USB on a different computer.
If the drive still doesn't work with a USB connector somewhere else, I would recommend tracking down Samsung support to see if there are additional things you can try.
Other than that, perhaps others here may have different ideas.Last edited: May 7, 2018 -
