Hehe.. Well, a bit stressful yes, but you get used to it. It is getting near to THAT time again by the way...

Just a quick comment to the OP. Maybe Windows 10 is showing slow SSD performance in benchmarks - I had the same with Crystal Disk Mark & AS SSD tests when comparing against my previous results in Windows 7. However, I've figured out what the 'the problem' was: for some reason my CPU is not kicking up a gear enough when running 4K random testing which is proven by massively improved benchmark results when loading just one core with Prime95 while doing the 4K Random testing - doing this increased my 4K Random Read in AS SSD from 22MB/s to 38MB/s, and in Crystal Disk Mark from 32MB/s to 45MB/s. The problem for me was that Windows 10 was keeping my CPU cores in sleep states like C1, C3 & C6 - I could also replicate a fix for the problem by disabling all C-states in the BIOS, but then that meant my CPU was always locked to it's maximum 4 core turbo frequency & wouldn't go to higher frequencies during single threaded loads - it would be stupid to run my laptop in this way, so I've re-enabled all sleep states and I live with theory that only benchmarks are affected & during real world situations the CPU will be activated enough to allow for full 4K performance when it needs it.

I've been looking into why my 950 was bringing my whole computer to a crawl. My throttling gets so bad, it cuts writes down to 40MB/s. Idles around 75c and temps reach 98c really quickly. I will need to act fast before Samsung claims this is not a warranty problem since they state it's by design... if it dies.. I'm SOL.

What specific model? What connection? What notebook?

Sorry didn't know it mattered,
AW 15r2, 950 Pro. I assume you can guess the connection type lol but it's running at 32gbps.
The pm951 also runs very hot. Benchmarks show full advertised speed if I let my laptop cool off. It boots and the SSD is at 40c and shortly after the first benchmark finishes, it's up to 98c and speeds are tanked. I run 3-4 VMs at any given momemt and it's painfully slow. I almost thinking about switching to my SATA 2TB instead and use the 950 as a secondary. My 1TB mSATA had no issues.
Looks like this hahhaha

Every single NVMe SSD I have seen runs stupid hot, and really needs active cooling to remain cool. It has no place in a laptop until the technology and implementation maturestilleroftheearth likes this.

it does seem that way huh

Yeah, high performance needs high power and with a bare drive, there is nowhere for the heat to go...
Almost thinking about switching to a 2TB SATA?
I would get rid of the 950 and only use a competent SATAIII drive.
The RAM and SSD you want is called Optane w/3D XPoint (Intel) inside.
Get your money out of this wasted (for most notebooks) technology while you can and start saving for a Kaby Lake platform instead. -
Mine is maxed out at 50-60C tops.. Use some thermal pads to connect the SSD to the laptop chassis and it helps to cool it.. My P771ZM does a good job of cooling my SM951 s as a result

Hmm I can post them a bit later when I'm on my laptop but had a multi hour gaming session and max temp reported by HWinfo64 was 53C on that day.. I haven't seen it gone past 61C ever even on hotter days..I do use it for my OS drive and BF4 only so its not totally overloaded or anything..

Ok here are the max temps after 2 hours gaming session.. Doesn't break 56C...

i think he rather meant pics of the actual cooling setup on your drive...
-
It's literally bits of thermal pad stacked up on top of the SSD till they reach the HDD bay cover.. Nothing special... I'm not even using proper pads, it's old ones off my GPUs and bits and pieces I had lying around.. Very Ghetto lol.alexhawker and jaybee83 like this.

as long as it works!
ill most likely do the same once i switch to an m.2 ssd

Is there anyone who has tried the surface pro NVMe drivers on 950 Pro as in the post?

Will try this later today... Nice spot mate!

huh interesting! i wonder where that comes from? faulty powersaving / higher efficiency?

From what I see, people using the Surface NVMe drivers complain about slow speeds.....until they install the Samsung NVMe driver.
