The 980 brings a significant change of different direction for Samsung, so it will be interesting to see what the pricing will be like on their new 980 EVO line (when/if released). While the 980 PRO still caries a price premium compared to most of their competition, the reduction in price of their flagship product is an indication that consumers are comfortable choosing competing products which are often significantly less expensive (and offer comparable quality, warranty, and performance).
They finally moved on from MLC NAND, and reduced the warranty to 5 years, along with much lower endurance ratings.

I wouldn't buy this drive (from the 'reviews' I've read so far at least), but what I find interesting is that the maximum pseudo-SLC of the 1TB drive requires a minimum of 324GB free space to do its sleight-of-hand with. That is 324GB out of a formatted ~954GB (or, ~33.9%).
Seems kinda interesting, no? Me recommending 33% OP'ing and all for the last half-decade plus... for maximum ( advertised) sustained performance over time (almost no matter how you use the drive).

A 2TB model will need 648GB free, I assume. That is why I always have OP'd all my 2TB SSD's to 1.25TB formatted capacity so I don't see them start to crawl as I use them.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Because they released an OEM version of this drive and it has taken such as step back in many areas, Samsung is ditching the EVO from the lineup. This drive is the 980 EVO, called a PRO, and there is no real successor to the PRO line.
