Wonder what the power consumption will be with these Sammy's?
-
Finally! They announced these at IFA back in August, though I bet we don't actually see them available until late October/early November.
PS - Yes, I saw mid October in the article. -

The best just got better!
 -
I hope Samsung manages to halve the 840's power consumption compared to the 830...
-
Wow, that is amazing. Samsung 830 already is the best SSD, so I did not even thought a new version coming... I'd like to see an mSata drive too...
-
I was gunning for the Plextor M3 pro, but this SSD is the fastest out there now. Seriously insane speeds, both with file transfers and with the most important, small files and disk buisy time.
Samsung 840 is one seriously SICK SSD
As Anandtech puts it:

And I forgot another important aspect:
You know Sandforce and the way they suck with incompressible data?
Here is Samsung 840 with incompressible and compressible data:
No change what so ever. The Samsung controller deals with both of these data types equally bloody fast. Well done Samsung  -

I too am excited about this drive (especially the 512GB models) mostly because Samsung seems to have tamed the high power consumption the 830 demanded when not at idle.
However, before I even consider testing this in my configurations, I will let others be guinea pigs first:
Otherwise, yeah the Samsung 840 Pro 256/512GB models are the ones to beat right now. These seem poised to dominate for 2013. -
-
Now, give me one of these in mSATA available for consumers...

Cloudfire, thanks for the links!
After reading all the reviews it seems like the new Samsung 840 PRO is not 100% better (real world usage) than what we currently have. Sure, the synthetic benchmarks/'scores' are better - but rwu is very close (and sometimes; worse) than the best drives available today.
Hopefully where the 840 PRO falls flat is able to be corrected with a firmware update, but I'm very impressed that the Samsung toolbox will allow reserving space for a better (sustained) user experience (although I don't know why they limited it to 24%).
Back to waiting mode... (not so hot for this product anymore...). -
Falls flat? Where?
I see wins in almost every aspects. Shure its 20MB/s slower than the Vertex 4 in very few scenarios, but it wins in just about everything. Take especially look at the light workload from the Anandtech review. Thats a clear win (especially over the Vertex 4) and is probably the test that represent the most normal scenarios for us users. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Talking real world usage (rwu) and here is one example:
The Program file copy test:
See:
Samsung 840 Pro SSD Review > Benchmarks: File Copy Test - TechSpot Reviews
Where the 512GB 840 PRO is slower than an mSATA 256GB M4 and even the better performing SATA2 Intel 320 300GB SSD.
As a matter of fact; it is just under twice as fast as a mechanical vRaptor 1TB - does that put things in perspective? To me; it falls flat.
I'll have to repeat here once again: 'scores', benchmarks and other synthetic ratings have never impressed me - at least when rwu showed otherwise.
As usual, you pick your product and also pick your trade-offs - with what I've seen initially; I'm not ready to pick these trade-offs (yet). -
Light workload > File transfer
for 95% of users
Seriously how many times do people perform a file transfer? Even in a year, I think that is VERY rare. Except the "Program", the 840 is right there on the top anyways.
I`m disappointed that no one bothered to test real world tests with this SSD, but even in the same review you link to, its the fastest with game loading
Samsung 840 Pro SSD Review > Benchmarks: Real-World Applications - TechSpot Reviews
Its like 15seconds faster than Samsung 830. I think thats impressive. No its not many seconds ahead of the rest of the competition in this particular test, but probably 3-4 seconds above the rest is what we should expect as long as we have SATA 3 that limit the SSDs. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Cloudfire, I agree with everything you're saying - but if a product stumbles that bad Copying files - what other surprises does it have in store?
Also, Anand glossed over the fact that at high % filled states, it's performance can tank to sub 20MB/s... (oh my!).
I agree that we need a faster interface to distance each new SSD's from the current crop - but I also believe that a balanced storage subsystem is still a worth while goal to have: and it seems like the 840 PRO is not it (for me). -
Well hopefully this pushes the 830's down in price, would be great if they were at the same price as M4's.

This should help price of the 830 512GB I plan to buy very soon too. More than fast enough for us.
-
I'm excited to see how 2 of these drives will perform in Raid 0. The 830 was a great drive on its own but didn't do so well in Raid compared to other drives especially in the 4K random reads.
-
I am excited as well, looking forward to acquire one of these.
-
Samsung crushed the SSD's market! Mother of god

Wonder how they compare to the Plextor M5 Pro?

I didn't get the time to read the review, how much difference between 840 Pro and normal one ? Planning to buy the normal pro price is high don't know the price worth the performance or not. Well they are not providing the notebook kit same as 830.
-
I just hope prices get lower.
-
-
Um, when is this going on sale here in the states? Kinda tired of waiting...
-
-
Yeah I`m super tired of waiting as well. Put them out for sell already god dammit
I would much rather buy Plextor M3 pro instead of Samsung 840 regular version if I were you.

I think Samsung 830 is not far behind, if the price difference is right I would go for 830.
-
-
Anyone knows when these will be available in the market? I am planning to buy a 256GB 840 PRO.

Anandtech review up for the non-pro version. Not much of an upgrade over the 830...
-
I just bought a Samsung 256GB 830 SSD (NEW) for $169.99, on a sale. I lucked out, two were in-stock, as soon as I saw it, I bought it.
Perhaps after the 840's are out for a while, and the price begins to dive, I'll upgrade. -

Lol... those aren't discounts... save your money for the real savings when they actually ship.
(and a few guinea pigs have already tested them for us...). -
davidricardo86 Notebook Deity
OMG a brand new unreleased SSD and it cost more than the previous generations?! Its not like its an improvement over the past gen? What a rip off, that's not a discount, FREE is a discount! What has this world come to? /s
You gotta pay to play my friend. I wouldn't mind being a guinea pig for the 512GB 840 Pro! I'll risk my poor little OS and apps for some of that.(Backup, backup, backup)
-
Yeah I won`t even use my energy to comment on some things thats being said in this thread. Not shure if they are just trolling or whatever.
And you`re not a guinea pig either. This is Samsung. Solid quality. Enough said.
I`m getting one, not shure if I will get the 128GB or the 256GB. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Oh, I see... Samsung means 'no guinea pigs will be hurt in the making of this drive'... lol...

And as to the great prices if you pre-order?
Same great MSRP prices as were posted over three weeks ago.

But of course, you go right ahead and ignore me - I'm only trying to keep your best interests at heart.
(Unlike the marketing machine that's called 'newegg'). -
OH NOES, a review sample died. Did you read any more reviews where the 840 died? No?
No Samsung 830 drives have been DOA or have died suddenly... Not even the legend Intel X25-M. No sir, not possible. 0% faulty devices...
As for the price, wow, didn`t see that. Pretty sneaky "discount" by Newegg. Anyhow, doesn`t matter at all for me. I will pay whatever it costs anyway since I have to have one. Atleast we know the release date and its ready for preorder now @ Newegg. Good enough for me -
And the "normal" 840 AnandTech - Samsung SSD 840 (250GB) Review
btw the PRO benchmarked the hell out of everything -

Cloudfire, wow???
Good luck on your choice.
Take care. -
-
Anyone know if this drive will work in a lenvovo x220t?
Thanks,
-michael -
davidricardo86 Notebook Deity
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it will work though. I don't see any reason why not. Unless of course you happen to buy a dud like the one Anandtech received. I kid, I kid... :hi2: -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
-
I'm think I'm ready to be a guinea pig for the lenovo x220t
I'll newegg it pre-order
wonder how long that will take to arrive
That would get me to my almost ideal machine. If only it were a x230t
