I have an optical drive bay caddy coming and I thought I might cheap out and use my 1yr old USB external's HDD to put in it.

The model is Samsung HM320JI, 320GB. I plan to just format it and go from there. So I'm wondering if it's good enough to be used as a data drive just to play games from.

My other option would be to go with a new 500GB or 320GB WD Black 7200RPM for $59.99 and $49.99 respectively.

It's fine, however levels will load quicker from a 7200rpm drive like the WD5000bekt.

The Samsung however is quieter and uses less power.

As Phill said. You must choose between speed/performance and power usage. :) I would go for 7200 rpm but if you allready have the samsung drive you can just try it out few days and if you don't be happy with the performance you can buy an 7200 disk..

Okay I'll just try it for a while and go from there...

the problem is though that when I have that drive plugged in via USB, the system just hangs at POST with the blinking cursor.

Will that problem transfer over to when it have it hooked up via SATA?

You shouldn't have that problem when connected internally.

To see if you can fix that particular problem now, go to your BIOS options and see if you can disable booting from USB (or legacy USB, I think).

    Good luck.
