Peter Welcome! Try pressing F2 or ESC right after power on to enter the BIOS & make sure the optical drive is recognized and/or enabled. IT will also help us to know exactly which model you have.
IF all looks good in BIOS load win 8 and open device manager and see if the drive is enabled there How To Open Device Manager in Windows 8

    Hi

Thanks for the response - when I went into Device Manager for my DVD/CD Rom Drive I got the following message

'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (Code 19)'

Can anyone throw some light on this for me?

You probably have the Upper/lower filters problem, you can try the Microsoft FixIt utility, the method I will show you involves you modifying the registry and could potentially screw up your computer, always backup your registry before modifying it.

Go to run or Windows + R and type regedit and hit enter.

    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    Go to SYSTEM

    Go to CurrentControlSet

    Go to Control

    Go to Class

Go to {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete Upper Filter and Lower Filter values.

    Reboot your computer.
