This is not really a purchase question but rather than a warranty one. I figure I can get an answer here from the hardware people. My friend's Dell NB, out of warranty, has a bad stick of RAM. This was noted to Dell during the warranty period, but she did not send it back. Can Samsung, maker of the RAM, cover this and how to approach Samsung, if so? How would Samsung know that it was purchased from Dell?

Typically, parts are sold to notebook makers without a warranty, but the manufacturer, in this case Dell, provides a warranty for the machine, which included all the parts. Once that warranty expires, there's no remaining warranty, though it never hurts to ask.
