    Samsung NC 10 laptop - no sign of life (out of warranty)

    Left my Samsung NC10 laptop running in standby a few days ago - it was plugged into the mains at the time
    When I came back to it a few hours later it was off - no lights at all no fans to hard drive activity

    Tried another power socket - nothing

    Thought it might be a failed PSU so tried another which is defintely working - no joy

    Opened up back - DC Power socket isn't loose
    No sign of overheating or a burning smell
    Hard Drive and memory seated properly

    Swapped momory to another working module - no joy

    Tried all the various ATX laptop reset techniques eg DC supply
    out battery out press power button down 60s then either put battery
    back in or plug in DC supply - no joy

    Did a CMOS reset - no joy

    Could the DC power socket still be the issue even tho it's not loose?
    What are my next logical steps in diagnosing and fixing this problem

    The NC10 netbook is a nice machine, but it sounds like the MB got fried?

    Was this overclocked at all?

    I would remove the RAM, the HDD, the wireless card and the battery and press every button/switch on the system to drain any residual static electricity and then leave it apart for at least 24 Hrs (putting it inside a sealed bag of rice would not be a bad idea either - make sure the rice doesn't get into the notebook though...).

    In a day or two (~48 Hrs...), I would again be pressing every button and button combination I can on the system to really make sure any static/residual electricity is really drained.

    Now, plug in a known good AC adaptor (without the HDD, RAM or wireless card installed yet...) and see if it tries to power on. Any sounds? Any sign of life? Are you able to get to the BIOS screen?

    If yes; then install the RAM and see that it is recognized.

    If yes; then install the HDD and see if that is recognized and the system boots.

    If yes; then finally install the wireless card.

    If everything seems to be working at this point: install the battery and retest everything.


    Make sure to be removing the power (and/or battery) between each point above and if the system is unresponsive with AC power - try a known/charged battery instead.

    What I would also be doing before re-installing the RAM, HDD and wireless card is cleaning their contacts with something like Deoxit contact cleaner.

    I would also be seeing if the HDD contains any data (clues) while I had it removed from the system by connecting it to another system via an external enclosure. (If you have an exact same system to try; switch the HDD's and see if any log files give any indication of what happened).

    If after all of this there is no joy - salvage what you can from the HDD - I would assume that the MB is dead at this point (and/or the processor too...).
