I have a 3 year old PM951 Samsung SSD, the 1TB model. I also have the latest-greatest PM981 SSD from Samsung, does it make sense to upgrade PM951 to something newer?
I cannot tell any difference between their speeds. PM951 is not that much faster than SATA SSDs, maybe twice as fast while PM981 is 6 or 7 times as fast as SATA SSD.

If you can keep the temps of PM981 down under heavy load then the performance in terms of R/W are almost double or triple of PM951.

I think you've already answered your question. Most users would never notice the difference between a SATA and NVMe SSD. Unless you're doing large file transfers or a ton of 4k video editing, I'd say keep the PM951.Papusan, Vistar Shook and Vasudev like this. -
I rarely do large file transfers or any 4K video editing. I only transfer a lot of data when I clone the disks with Macrium Reflect and it is does not matter how long it takes (but usually in about 30 minutes). and the process runs in the background.
Maybe I will wait for several more years until the 2TB SSDs drop to a reasonable price range and get it then.
I cannot tell any difference in real life between SATA SSDs and PCIe SSDs and especially between "slow" PCIe and faster PCIe. -
For NVMe MR works great, backing or imaging is super fast. If you do OS imaging, work on huge datasets etc.. then NVMe upgrade might work for you.

I have come to realize what I really need is a 2TB external USB SSD. I have several SP Silicon drives and they are extremely slow being spinning rust.
Samsung PM951 SSD - upgrade to a new SSD?
