Hello! I've got a Samsung QX411L laptop and the hard drive appears to be dying. It is a 1tb Seagate Sata II 5400rpm hard drive. I want to know if I can get a Sata 3 7200rpm hard drive? Or do I have to get the same hard drive as is in the laptop presently? Thanks!

I believe sata II and III are pin compatible, so you should be fine. It won't run at sata III speeds, but you can still put a sata III hard drive (or SSD) in there.

Sata2 and Sata3 are fully compatible, choose any. I should remind, though, that SATA2 speeds are enough for any HDD, only SSD will benefit from SATA3 speeds. Both Hitachi 7200rpm and Seagate Laptop SSHD would be a good choice.

Your circa 2011 notebook should have SATA3 connections for the storage subsystem - even if the supplied HDD was only SATA2.

I fully agree with a Hitachi Travelstar HDD as a replacement, but do not recommend any current SSHD at all.

You do not have to get the same HDD as what you have (I would avoid Seagate HDD's myself) and if your budget and workflows would allow it: I would recommend a 480GB SanDisk Extreme II SSD instead (or even higher end; budget permitting).

    See:

    Good luck.

I would personally recommend spending the extra if u can and getting the Extreme II.. You won't be disappointed by it.. I have the 240GB version and its absurdly fast...
