Hi Guys,
It's buying new SSD time... I honestly want to give an M2 SSD a shot so was thinking of getting the SM951.. Heard some great things about it... What's the difference in between the NVME and AHCI versions? I'm thinking of getting the NVME one however it's almost impossible to get... Will it even work in my Batman with no problems?

Unless Batman is continually flapping his wings to cool those atrocious (less than SATA3 Q1 performance) M.2 throttling toys, save yourself some headaches and skip this.
Not even considering if it will even work with no other problems for your system. -
I've been debating the same thing quite recently. I keep coming to the same conclusion that tilleroftheearth is offering: the heat issues are out of control and it's probably not worth the headache. In a notebook you don't have the same allowance that you do in a desktop to deal with a component generating so much heat.
It's disappointing because NVMe excites me, but there don't seem to be many great options. -
batman does indeed provide booting ability with nvme drives thx to prema mod bios
as for the heat issues, it only becomes evident when u put significant load onto the drive for longer periods of time (e.g. continuous writing for several minutes), but is still an issue, since active cooling like a small fan are required to resolve this.
better wait for upcoming nvme drives, shouldnt be too long anymore until theres more competition on the market, especially considering skylake bringing m.2 drives to mainstream level now!

so which ssd should i get for my next system? i want the fastest one with the fastest response time and is good under heavy work loads.
-
You'll probably get the typical SanDisk Extreme Pro/Samsung 850 Pro canned response. Just watch.

How heavy is "heavy work loads"?
-
Phase, what do you suggest, if not the best known, best performing solutions? And, why?
-
Phase, you need to let us know if it is going to be 2.5" SATA, M.2 SATA, or M.2 PCIe x4 or x8. Also, are you going to RAID0 - how many drives?
-
well if youre out for a drive right NOW id just get any sata ssd of your choice and use that to bridge the time until the m.2 nvme market is sufficiently populated
and yes @octiceps, for sata these are just the two top performing drive series, period

Is there an advantage of NVME? Seems to be a bit gimicky to me.. AHCI does the job.. I'm fine with getting the AHCI version however anyone know a cheap place to get it?
-
The difference is there but it is very small for now.

If that is really your criteria; then the 2TB Samsung 850 EVO or Pro (I would test both...) would be the only drives I would compare to the 'canned' SanDisk Extreme Pro 480GB or larger.
Anything below the 2TB SSD's in Samsung's offerings are to be avoided like the plague for the bolded part of your quote below.

where nvme helps immensely is not sequential performance, but rather small file size IOPS and latency. thats where u get huge boosts
and thats also the important area for everyday OS operations...

The total latency or sync 4K throughput is so similar between NVMe and high end SATA drives now it doesn't make much sense. SM951 is still special, but only because it's M2 and easy to deploy in laptops. The other NVMe drive, the pure desktop/server 750, seems to lose to cheaper RAID solutions in every way.Last edited: Sep 6, 2015

having adobe premire pro, after effects, adobe audition and photoshop open at the same time, with all of them linked together and pulling from the same batch of large HD video files with alternating between the programs

Ok since I've got my microserver now, I'm thinking of moving my 240 Sandisk Extreme II to it and getting a new OS drive for my laptop.. Personally, the SM951 still seems to be the best option and I'm not too fussed by not having NVME... Any final opinions on whether I should get it or not? AHCI is really speaking enough for me...

I ordered mine through HIDevolution and they actually have the faster Samsung SM951 NVME version, so I ordered 2 of those and configured them as RAID 0 for a total of 1TB and for storage I chose 2 Samsung 2TB Spinpoint 5400 RPM HDDs also in RAID 0 for a total of 4TB for the storage.
