I'm trying to do a firmware update on my samsung SSD. I have the MMDOE28G5MPP-0VA running firmware VAM05D1Q. According to this website (and samsung themselves, though I can't find the link now) this drive should support TRIM with a firmware update. However, the firmware updater ( found here) does not see the drive (at least not as one compatible with the update).

I'm guessing the problem has to do with the firmware version currently installed, as the instructions for the firmware update state that the old firmware is either VBM18C1Q or VBM1801Q, not VAM05D1Q. Do I first need to update to one of those firmwares? If so, where can I find them?

Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated!

You may have to try updating the SSD with a desktop system instead of your notebook.

Had to do that with an Intel SSD with an AMD Opteron based desktop (actually put it in an Intel based notebook and flashed it no problem).

Also, see if making a bootable USB key works better than a bootable CD drive (I remember reading some people had better luck with the bootable USB key).

    Good luck.

LOL, thanks for the help, but I've been trying to do it with a desktop, using a bootable USB drive.

Hmmm, everywhere lists this model as being TRIM capable, as well as having 220/200 speeds. I'm getting more like 80/50 for sequential on crystalmark. . . I wonder if I actually have one of the older, non-TRIM capable samsungs?

Well, looks like I'll be seeing how well ebay's buyer protection works. . .

Did you set the drive controller to IDE mode before trying to update?

Turns out the problem was that Samsung had listed this drive as a PB22-J drive when it's actually part of the old RBX series. So no TRIM for me :(

Fortunately, after asking around with people who own the drive, it sounds like performance degradation isn't bad in this model. Never gets to the point of stuttering, and still way better performance than HDD overall. So I'm just gonna keep it, got a good price on it anyway. :)

I have had the same problem, seems like a rivalry between Dell and Samsung in my case, even though Samsung make the drives, they sell them to Dell and then let Dell take over responsibility of the Firmware updates (or LACK of!).

I have a MMDOE28G5MPP-0VA 128GB with firmware VAM0501Q with no NCQ or TRIM and it really bugs me, if anyone has a solution for an upgrade that would support TRIM and NCQ then please let everyone know on this thread.

I have updated many other model SSDs (including Dell/Samsung through unsupported methods) and have been greatly pleased with them, but this particular model and firmware revision is a complete dog, DELL and SAMSUNG you should hang your heads in shame!
