I updated Samsung Magician Software from 2.0 to 3.0,,Its not on the web site yet,,you get it thru your Magician software 2.0. New feature------ Firmware updating has options -> windows solution or bootable usb drive, Interesting MS Windows based firmware update is now available.

    Cheers

so how does the windows based firmware update work? Just click "update" in windows, reboot and bobs yer uncle? Surely it can't be that easy?! :)

The 470 series can't be upgraded via the Windows GUI. You have to do it with DOS.

Following from the Magician 3.0 User Manual:

Samsung 470 Series SSDs do not support Windows-based firmware updates. If you have a Samsung 470 Series SSD, please skip to Section 3.3 for instructions on how to update your firmware using the DOS-based firmware update utility.

You say there's a way to get it from within the program? I never saw any notifications or links to grab it.

Closer look at the user manual ,,,Thats right,,the 470 Series still uses DOS,, 830 Series can use windows based firmware updates,, Thats odd they would leave it out, now it looks like the update was for 830 SSD downloaded to 470 SSD Series.Thx maximinimaus for the input.

    Cheers

You beat me 3Fees. I was just coming on here to let others know they can use 3.0 with more features. Glad I looked at your post. Have you got the 830 yet?

No, The 830 are SATA III,,my Notebook is SATA II controller,,Prices will drop on Notebooks with Sandy Bridge Sata III controllers early next year when Ivy Bridge starts showing up. I tried the secure erase feature of version 2 booting from usb drive,,kept getting "power cycle the drive" so i used another program to write zero's to the the SSD drive to restore to factory fresh and then used Windows 7 backup and restore to reimage the SSD from Win 7 dvd repair disk,Back up and Restore asked -reimage the drive with the image size in backup, said yes and a few minutes later-I was back in windows, all good.

I did upgrade my processor recently from Intel T3400 to Intel T6500 Core 2 Duo,,667 Mhz to 800 Mhz FSB- Merom L2 1mb to Penryn L2-2mb,,,notebook runs much cooler and is faster to boot.

    Cheers
