I recently bought a Samsung Story external hard drive, it's been good so far, but my main gripe is the fact that it goes into sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. After, it randomly wakes up at varied times of a few seconds to 30 + minutes (I guess a process in widows is using every so often). The drive is constantly spinning down then spinning up, I know this can shorten hard drive life.

So, I was wondering whether or not I could unplug the USB connection, or whether I should turn it off (it has a power on/off knob) when it's not in use. I use it almost every day, but Samsung did not include a feature to keep it constantly running, which I think it stupid. I have tried un-mounting it with the Disk management program and it doesn't work. I also tried the command line, mountvol, included in Vista, and that doesn't work.

    Thanks in advanced.

I don't see a problem with turning it off when you aren't using it, as long as you're not constantly turning it on/off every couple minutes or something.

I have the same external drive,Samsung Station 1.5 TB External Drive Right?

In fact, spinning up and down will not decrease the life, only spinning always should decrease the drive's life.If you do not do a process related to External Hard Drive,it is normal that is spins down, however it feels not good to wait for it to spin up when needed. It might suck for some people.I hope Samsung finds a solution for this.
