I wonder why they had to move it out to the PCIe bus when the current SATA revision is rated at double that speed. Also, an expensive SLI set up could damage the drive. All heat is blown down, right?

Enterprise do not need sli gpu in the sever. Number cruncher will use ram disk.

Several servers use GPUs for CUDA. We use GPUs every day for our work. CAD tools use CUDA. Besides, it is a 2.5" disk. I can purchase it if I want.

I would imagine servers would either passively cool dense PCIe arrays with high CFM negative pressure or watercooling. If both are not a possibility then usually air blower fans are used so there will be limited case heat buildup.
