I have a NP550P5C-S03CA Intel Core i5 3210M in my Samsung Notebook. I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade it to an i7 and which one it would take. Thanks!

First off what socket type is it? That would determine if you can go i7 and also did you contact Samsung to find out if they can even go i7?

The notebook shipped with both i5 and i7 based platforms. Whether the cpu's could be swapped is another story though. Samsung makes it hard to look up the parts that they shipped with.

Either way, upgrading a cpu and/or gpu was never high on my list of 'must do' upgrades. Even with my desktop systems. A working system trumps a semi-working upgraded system any day. And is worth more money (when sold) than when you are trying to sell parts.

A newer platform will be the better bet on spending your money today than messing around with a 2/3 year old platform. Sell the current one as-is and put that money towards a platform that better matches your workflow requirements today.

New computer smell, warranty and the latest iterations of the components and O/S included. For not much more money than you might spend in upgrades of an older platform to give it some of the same advantages.

The first post in this thread (you may wish to read the whole thread) indicates that the N550P5C also shipped with the i7-3610QM so that CPU will definitely be supported by the system. Other CPUs of the same family and socket may also work.

And this review indicates the CPU socket is 988B rPGA.

You could upgrade to an i7, no problem.
